A Spiritual House of Peace

“Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house.”  ~ 1 Peter 2: 5

In reflecting on this Sunday’s scripture from 1 Peter 2: 2-10 the beautiful MCCDC Peace Pole on the corner of 5th and Ridge Street NW comes to mind.  It stands as a call to prayer, peace and friendship in our busy neighborhood.  Many of our neighbors have expressed their appreciation for the inspiration they receive when they see our Peace Pole. One neighbor wrote me to say they pause at the Peace Pole every day to pray.  They have their own faith community in another neighborhood, yet they share this connection to MCCDC in a meaningful way.

The MCCDC Peace Pole is not just a pretty monument.  It also conveys our commitment to be a people of peace.   Our call is to bring this beautiful monument of stone to life by teaching and living the way of peace.

We offer peace to those overcoming addictions through the Friday night and Saturday morning NA groups that meet at MCCDC. We bring peace to one another by staying in touch amidst frenzied isolation. To the despairing we teach the peace that comes through faith, centered in hope. Daily, we work for peace.  By choosing peace, we become the change we want to see for our neighborhood and beyond.

In the message this Sunday at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM I will reflect further on our call to be the people Peter describes in his letter to early Christians that were seeking to build community across the five provinces in Asia Minor:  “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people!” (1 Peter 2:9).

See you this Sunday as together we experience the presence of the living God who has the power to bring a stone monument to life.
