Through his ministry, again and again, Jesus teaches us of the marvelous transformations that can happen when we give attention to God, instead of to the thousands of distractions that society offers us.” ~Kristin Berkey-Abbott
Martha has an agenda. She is in a tizzy to accomplish it. Who is she trying to impress? She has made Jesus feel welcome in her home. She has shown him love and hospitality. Yet evidently enough is not enough. Perhaps she is caught in a whirl of self-imposed expectations and perfectionism. Jesus, not one to mince words says: “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing.”
Was Martha calm enough to notice the tenderness with which Jesus spoke her name? “Martha, dear Martha. . .” In this evocative story from Luke 10: 38-42, Jesus invites Martha to marvelous transformation beyond the suffocation of worry and the fragmentation of distraction.
Debi Thomas calls out some questions that emerge from this story. I’m personally pondering these questions and invite you to do so also: “Is your inner life so fragmented, so strangled, so incoherent, that you struggle to give and receive love? Has your busyness become an affront to people you long to host? Is your worry keeping you from being fully present, fully engaged, fully alive? Have you lost the ability to attend? To linger? To delve deep? Are you using your packed schedule to avoid intimacy with God or with others?”
I admit that sometimes my answer to many of those questions is yes. How about you?
And, I find great hope in the invitation of Jesus that is at the center and heart of this story: “Dear Martha. . .one thing only is essential. . .it’s the main course.” While Jesus is looking forward to the “main course” that Martha has labored over in the kitchen, what he deeply hungers for is the true main course: time together.
