“The day the power of love overrules the love of power, the world will know peace.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Our scripture for this Sunday shows the values of Jesus in his ministry as he “returned in the power of the Holy Spirit to Galilee, and his reputation spread throughout the region” (Luke 4:14). As Jesus taught in Galilean synagogues, his message was so transformative that loud praise erupted from open hearts.
We don’t know what Jesus taught in these various synagogues, except for what he said in his hometown synagogue of Nazareth: “The Spirit of our God is upon me: because the Most High has anointed me to bring Good News to those who are poor. God has sent me to proclaim liberty to those held captive, recovery of sight to those who are blind, and release to those in prison” (Luke 4: 18). Jesus states his values, and his source for living out his values.
Jesus embodied the power of love and with a gracious heart that was free from the love of power. As spiritual writer Robert Brearley notes, Luke describes Jesus beginning his ministry with the guidance of the Holy Spirit: “The Holy Spirit came and taught Jesus what was real: to say no to the false options and temptations in this world and yes to God’s good purposes for all people; to say no to self-glory in all its forms and yes to helping the poor and the captured of all kinds; to say no to trying to get your God to work for you and yes to working for your God with urgency and compassion.”
This Sunday, we will consider the values of Jesus and the implications of his values on our individual and collective values.
In preparation for Sunday, I invite you to pray this prayer with me:
“God, help me to use the gifts you’ve given me to bring freedom to others. When I become self-focused, guide me to back to wholeness, to fully loving myself and loving others. And so it is. Amen.”
By Faith,
Pastor Dwayne
The Power of Love
Join us Onsite, Online and later On Demand for 9am ET Spiritual Engagement Hour.
This Sunday’s Highlights:
We’ll reflect on Luke 4: 14-22 which is one of the lectionary scriptures
for the Third Sunday After the Epiphany.
We’ll juxtapose the text with this quote by Gandhi:
”The day the power of love overrules the love of power,
The world will know peace.”
How does Jesus embody the quote from Gandhi?
How does the love of power show up around us?
What are ways we can live the power of love each day?
We’ll share our thoughts on these questions.
+You are invited to share your writings, scriptures or other resources/ideas with the group.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #129
by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
God’s Generosity
“Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.” ~ Albert Camus
I was blocked to God’s abundance
Due to a mindset of poverty
Adopted from an impoverished environment
That I accepted as life’s predicament
Money is the root of evil I was told
Spewed forth from fundamentalist scrolls
A right-ness condoned by the pious poor
Yet, I looked for evidence of prosperity
In things to produce more for posterity
Thoughts and beliefs became conflicted
Actions were contradicted
Tasks begun but not completed
My vision blurred, could not see clearly
That God’s blessings continued tenderly
The evidence of God’s generosity
Begin to peel away my skepticism and viscosity
I begin to notice that things taken for granted
Were God’s gifts—prosperity was not stranded
I gave thanks for all God has done
Deep gratitude expressed daily
Opened my eyes to God’s abundance
“By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” Hebrews 11:3 NIV
