Give yourself grace and the time you need.” ~Larry Garrett
Our world is broken. This is reflected in so many ways, locally and globally. At MCCDC we seek to offer a place of wholeness. We seek to be generous in how we listen, how we provide resources and how we teach. It is not easy. The work of wholeness requires grace, time and patience.

Luke 19: 1-10 is the iconic account of Jesus and Zacchaeus. This story offers many perspectives, including implications on moving towards generous wholeness. It also includes an invitation to reconsider one’s perspectives, giving oneself the grace and time to implement growth and change.

Like many of us, Zacchaeus wrestled with contradictions in his life, seeking to live by higher values yet at times compromising. As a chief tax collector, Zacchaeus was an agent of the oppressive Roman government. He was viewed as an oppressor, feared because of his power. He was an outsider, wealthy economically, yet isolated and poor in relationships.

It was time for a new perspective. Zacchaeus climbs a sycamore tree to see Jesus beyond the crowd. His hopes are met as he sees Jesus. And beyond his hopes Jesus also sees him. Then Jesus says: “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down!”
The unexpected goes even further and deeper as Jesus invites himself to stay at Zacchaeus’ home.

I’ve long wondered about the details of the conversation shared by Jesus and Zacchaeus. It was clearly a conversation about the ways of wholeness and love. Jessica Mesman writes, “Zacchaeus shows me I don’t need to fear being seen by Jesus. I might be transformed into someone I don’t recognize, but my current form is the one God wants to meet and enter, right now.”

Ultimately, Jesus offers a description of their time together: “Today salvation has come to this house, because Zacchaeus too is a descendant of Sarah and Abraham. For the Promised One came to seek out and to save the lost” (Luke 19:9-10).

This Sunday at 10:30AM Eastern onsite, online and later on demand, we’ll look at the path of wholeness and how generosity opens that path. We’ll consider the intersections of determination, surrender, human need and the liberating power of Jesus as we aspire to wholeness.

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnso

Thich Nhat Hanh on True Love

Join us on-site, on-line and later on-demand for 9 AM ET Spiritual Engagement Hour.

This Sunday’s Highlights:

+We live in times that are impacting mental health. At MCCDC we offer support.
We are aware of stigma and seek to create a space for open conversations
to help us learn from each other in a spiritual context.

+To prepare, reflect on this quote from Thich Nhat Hanh:
“In true love, you attain freedom. When you love, you bring freedom to the person you love. If the opposite is true, it is not true love. You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free, not only outside but also inside.”

+Bring your favorite poems or other writings.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #161

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“If you want love and abundance in your life, give it away.” ~ Mark Twain

Dear God, thank you for your generosity. Help us to willingly share of your generosity in ways that are pleasing to you. We are thankful for the willingness to share our abundance through the gifts of financial wealth, talents, skills, time, and treasures to spread the gospel and perform great works to glorify You. We are grateful for the timeless and immeasurable gift of mercy and grace you grant everyone each day. We accept your generosity that abounds in so many ways, and we are committed to share it for the gathering of souls into your realm and to help people in need to magnify your love for all people throughout the earth.

Let our hearts be glad for the opportunity to help someone through an act of compassion and kindness—a smile, words of encouragement, a meal, a shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear, praying together with someone, or spend quality time with someone or sit in meditational silence with loved ones. God, your generosity is so great that our gratitude is not able to exhaust the list of your goodness. Thank you, Lord, for all spiritual worship places for the gathering of your beloved community throughout the world. We are grateful to have direct communications with the Holy Spirit from our hearts wherever we may be. Thank you, God, in your many precious names! Amen.

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:18-19 (NIV)
