“Our world is far from perfect. Yet God is creating a new world. God does not create alone. We are the bearers of God in the world; the responsibility for the well-being of that world rests with us. We cannot throw our hands up in despair. We must not turn our well-being over to soulless corporations, greedy financiers, self-serving politicians, or anyone who shirks the task of helping God to create a new earth in which all can thrive. God calls for the full creative involvement of every one of us in the new order God intends.” ~ Nancy Mairs
One of the many paths of generosity is one in which we view ourselves as “bearers of God in the world.” God has given each of us gifts; with those gifts come responsibility. We are called to contribute to the well-being of others. This is true prosperity, not hoarded but shared. We each have something to share with others. In our current difficult realities, this is an important call of God for each one of us.
In Isaiah 65:17 the prophet calls for a new creation, a new reality. Isaiah presents the voice of God announcing, “For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.” The statement stands in stark contrast to the reality of that time. The ancient Israelites lived in deep poverty. One indicator of that poverty was infant mortality and childhood disease. Only about 1 in 4 live births made it to adulthood. Yet the prophet says, “No more shall there be an infant that lives but a few days” (Isaiah 65: 20).
This Sunday the path of generosity leads to the intersection of prophetic promise and troubling reality. Admittedly, it is difficult to see a spiritual vision of a new earth beyond devastation like the recent weather events in Jamaica, Haiti, the Philippines, and Taiwan and beyond. Yet we must not give in to the temptation to throw up our hands and settle for a constricted future. Rather, we must open up our hands in compassion to serve and build.
Anne Lamott, in her book “Stitches: A Handbook on Meaning, Hope and Repair” writes that in the face of devastation we need to do what’s in front of us and keep doing it. That may mean continuing to show up to protest unjust polices or to say no to bullying in its various manifestations. Or it could be raking leaves for an older adult neighbor who lives on a fixed income and cannot hire help–and is not physically able to do the work. Generosity in action brings healing.
Anne Lamott says “Every time we choose the good action or response, the decent, the valuable, it builds, incrementally, to renewal, resurrection, the place of newness, freedom, justice. The equation is: life, death, resurrection, hope.”
See you Sunday at 10:30AM onsite, online and on demand as we move together on the many paths of generosity.

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnso

This Sunday’s Highlights:
Join us on-site, on-line and later on-demand for 9 AM ET Spiritual Engagement Hour.
+We live in times that are impacting mental health. At MCCDC we offer support.
We are aware of stigma and seek to create a space for open conversations
to help us learn from each other in a spiritual context.
+To prepare, reflect on this quote from Anne Lamott:
“Gratitude begins in our hearts and then dovetails into behavior. It almost always makes you willing to be of service, which is where the joy resides. It means you are willing to stop being such a jerk. When you are aware of all that has been given to you, in your lifetime and in the past few days, it is hard not to be humbled, and pleased to give back.”
+Bring your favorite poems or other writings.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #85

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
“You must do the things you think you cannot do.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Dear God, bless the consistent giving of our financial gifts and help us to give wholeheartedly and be thankful always of what we do have. We are grateful for the many levels of prosperity that you give us—the ability to attain wealth, the priceless gift of health, the air we breathe, the choice to choose whom we will serve each day, helping people in need, the sharing of talents, skills, time and treasures performed for spiritual edification; and for day-to-day living. We rejoice in your generosity, both visible and invisible.
Help us to demonstrate faith and to trust you like Jesus did when he fed the five thousand people [Luke 9:10-17 (NIV)] When the five loaves of bread and the two fish were placed before him, Jesus gave thanks and everyone ate their fill. Twelve baskets of food were left over! God, thank you for the faith and trust to release and let go of what we think are limitations or lack. We pray to fulfill the greatness that You imparted within each of us to be a light so that all can witness Your glory and miracles. May all that we do in your name multiply a hundredfold or more.
We are grateful for our earthly meeting place, the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, DC, and all spiritual places of worship where we can gather as one to learn and grow more in your grace. God, we rejoice in sharing your love by encouraging and helping one another to fulfill the work each has been called upon to perform. Thank you for your abundant blessings. In your precious names, we give thanks. Amen.
“ Jesus answered; . . . The truth is, if you have even as much faith as the tiny mustard seed, you can be able to say to this mountain, ‘ Move from here to there,’ and it will move.’ Nothing will be impossible to you.” – Matthew 17:20-21 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
