“Much work is needed in the world. Much work is needed in our homes, neighborhoods, and cities. The list is truly endless. And that list is important; it does matter! Martha’s tasks must be done. And yet. . .those tasks are not to become our gods, the center of attention in our waking and in our sleeping.” ~Juan Carlos Huertas

Jesus loved Martha and Mary. Equally. In Luke 10:38-42 it is easy to see this story through the lens of comparison. It is easy to see this story through the lens of competition. It is easy to see this story through the lens of extremes: Martha the stressed out workaholic vs. Mary the chilled out contemplative. .

The spiritual artists at A Sanctified Art invite us to approach the story through a more nuanced lens. They note that in many translations Jesus says that “Mary has chosen the better part” (Luke 10:42). A misinterpretation of that verse has been used to create a divide between Mary and Martha. “However, in the Greek, Mary has chosen the ‘good portion,’ and Martha’s tasks are called ‘ministry.’ Therefore, perhaps Mary represents our faith, our desire to know God intimately, and Martha represents our good works, our desire to transform the world. Both are needed, and both are good.”

I agree that this story is not about Jesus favoring Mary over Martha. We need more of both in the world. We need more of Martha, actively working to offer hospitality, meeting the needs of people’s bodies. We need more of Mary, with her openness to deep values and spiritual strengthening to face difficulties with inner resolve.

A good life brings together being and doing. MCCDC is called to be a beloved community that brings together faith and works.

9 am Spiritual Engagement Hour

Finding Grace in Lent

Join us Onsite, Online and later On Demand for 9am ET Spiritual Engagement Hour

This Sunday’s Highlights:

We are called to offer support in the midst of these difficult and painful times.

Countless people are impacted by unjust executive orders and continual threats.

We seek to care for others, and also for ourselves.

This Sunday is the Second Sunday in Lent. We’ll check-in on our Lenten experiences and how it is going.

+What justice themes intersect with the Season of Lent?

+From Nan Merrill’s version of Psalm 52:

“Why do you boast, O proud peoples, of your decisions that hurt the poor? All day long, you plan exploitation. Lies are on your tongue as you turn from the truth.
You love riches more than justice, burying your heads in the sand like the ostrich. So you are numb to the cries of the oppressed, numb to their impoverishment.”

+You are invited to share your writings, scriptures or other resources/ideas with the group.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #133

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“The more you struggle to live, the less you live. Give up the notion that you must be sure of what you are doing. Instead, surrender to what is real within you, for that alone is sure….you are above everything distressing.” Baruch Spinoza

Dear God, help us to live according to the purpose that you have planned for us as a beloved community, a diverse people throughout the earth. We surrender to you our doubts, fears, and obstacles that tend to block our faith and trust in your goodness and protection. We lean on your loving arms to hold us upright as we go through this passage of time to be courageous, stand and speak boldly of justice for all people according to each one’s ability to do so. Help us to be wise and deal justly with all people; and to pray for those who are against us. Through the power of prayer we place all of our cares upon you, Lord. Thank you for the strength and endurance to help us stand steadfast on your promise to never leave or forsake us.

We are thankful for spiritual worship spaces throughout the world where everyone is invited to fellowship in God’s glory, and pray and encourage and help each other. Thank you for the gift of generosity that encourages us to live a prosperous life from within. We are grateful to share of your abundance—our financial gifts, time, talent, skills, and treasures to help spread the gospel, gather more souls into your spiritual realm, and continue helping others in need. Thank you for your unconditional love. In your many precious names, we praise you. Amen.

“The fruit of justice is a tree of life, and those who teach others to act justly are wise.”

Proverbs 11:30 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
