This Week’s Reflection
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~?Howard Thurman
This Sunday marks the second in our Lenten season of preparation and making space inside us, in our homes, in our church, and in our communities. Space to commune with the God of our understanding and space to consider how to serve God in different ways. During this season of intentionality, we hope to draw even closer to God and each other through our spiritual practices. Know that God is present.
In this season we are also celebrating Black History Month. Our annual concert is being held on Saturday February 24 at 5pm ET. We hope to see you there in person or by livestream. It promises to be a time of fun, education, and thoughtfulness. Please plan on supporting your church family in person or online. We offer these annual events to honor Black folx in history, from the grandmother who’s name most of us never knew, to those who existed on a larger, broader stage. Each are important in the contribution they make in the lives of people. Who are the sheroes and heroes of black history in your life? I encourage you to name them and thank them.
We will continue that celebration and focus into our Sunday service. At the 9am ET service we will be having a “good ‘ol time” hymn sing. We’ll be learning about the history and background of some of the treasured hymns we sing and why they are so important to the writer, and in the life of our community today. At the 11am ET service we will be hearing the words of a pillar in black history, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail”. If you haven’t read or listened to this work recently, it is a fiery call to arms and a fitting finish to this year’s black history month. We’ll be so pleased to have you present at 9am ET, 11am ET or on demand.
Peace,
Rev. Cathy Alexander

“Keep your face always toward the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you.”
~ Walt Whitman
Dear God, thank you for trusting us to continue moving forward to accomplish the vision and mission of Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, regardless of doubts and fears that arise. Thank you for all spiritual places of worship of a beloved community that reaches across nations, countries, and continents to everyone. Through your unconditional love and forgiveness you made us worthy with the gift of eternal life.
We pray to always walk in your Light and keep our eyes on You and let the shadows of doubts and fears fall behind us. God, you are a way maker in all things that you have planned for us. We pray to remain to being immersed in your prosperity that surrounds us. Help us express love through your grace that does not have to be earned but we live in it according to your purpose.
We are grateful for talents, skills, time, treasures, and financial blessings to share willingly through the power of your grace and our abilities. Help us to remain steadfast and not grow weary of fulfilling the plans you have for us. With You, all things are possible when we believe, exercise faith, commitment, and perseverance. Thank you, in your many precious names. Amen.
“Blessed are those who persevere under trial! Once their commitment has been proven, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to the faithful.” James 1:12 (NIV) First Egalitarian Translation
