MCCDC - The Place To Be

“Sing a new song to the Lord!” ~Psalm 98: 1

God gives us the right song at the right time. When we are down, the right song brings a lift. When tired, the right song brings energy. When restless, the right song brings rest.

Songs gave courage to our ancestors. In Psalm 98 the psalmist invites our ancestors to sing a new song to God. They sing a song to God who is faithful in true love. They sing to God who made a way when there seemed to be no way. They sing to God who met their hunger with manna. They sing to God who called them to worship with a song for every occasion.

Multiple instruments created orchestras of courage and hope. One instrument was the shofar, a ram’s horn. The sounding of the shofar was a call to action. The shofar called people together for news and announcements. The shofar was used for holy ceremonies, including coronations and festivals such as the Day of Atonement.

Now, we are called to sing a new song. We are called to give new voice to the ancient song of Psalm 98. It is a song to God and about God. It is a song of praise to God who revels in songs from the nations. It is song of joy to a God who acts with steadfast love and faithfulness. This song is an old song that becomes new with hope that God “will rule the world with justice and its people with equity” (v. 9). Our world cries out for justice and equity.

In these times we need songs that ignite our courage. Think of your favorite songs and recall the moments when they made you dance, brought you to your knees in prayer, or inspired you to take action.

Grace and peace,

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

“Doing God’s work always makes me feel better.” ~ Cecelia Hayden-Smith

Dear God, thank you for “each new day to make a new beginning”[Momma Cee]. Thank you for the breath of life that quickened within our bodies the moment we became a living being in the womb. We are grateful for your generous prosperity which awakens us each day and inspires us to work tirelessly to help spread the gospel of your grace and forgiveness to people everywhere, and help others in need. We are grateful to be part of your Beloved Community without borders, to love, support, and encourage each other in troublesome periods, and celebrate the joyful times too. You are always with us to comfort and provide us the strength to stand again. We pray that our lives reflect your glory in the things we say or do, and that we remain humble, acknowledging that it is your Spirit that enables us.

We are grateful for our spiritual gathering place, Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, and all spiritual worship places. Thank you, God, for the outflowing of faith that helps us share in the good works you have prepared for us to perform within the Spiritual Realm. We are grateful for all who share generously of their talents of leadership, teamwork, financial gifts, skills, and precious treasures to reap a great harvest of souls for the Beloved Community. Embolden us to live faithfully, and separate us from habits and rituals that tend to hinder and blind us to your will; and that each day we are awakened with a renewed mind and a deeper fellowship with You. Dear God, thank you in your many precious names. Amen

“Never grow tired of doing good. We will reap a harvest at the proper time—if we don’t grow weary. So, while we still have time, do good to all and especially to those of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:9-10 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
