This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

7 I am about to create

new heavens and a new earth.

The things of the past

will not be remembered or come to mind!

18 Be glad and rejoice forever and ever in what I create,

because I now create Jerusalem to be a joy

and its people to be a delight!

22 They will not build for another to inhabit;

they will not plant for another to eat.

23 They won’t labor in vain,

nor bear children to a world of horrors,

because they will be people blessed by God,

they along with their descendants.

24?Before they call, I will answer;

while they are still speaking, I will hear.

(Isaiah 65:17-18, 22-24, alt.)

This powerful message from God as told in the book of Isaiah over 2000 years ago is specifically tuned to a community with a history of exile, suffering, oppression, and separation long endured. In it, God promises new creation–transformation ending suffering of mind, body, emotion, and spirit for the people. And, opportunity for renewed, deepened relationship with the Creator.

While some aspects of the changes described in this text can be thought to be solely the purview of the power and will of God, the reading also provides us with the opportunity to image and reflect on what our part in co-creating this new earth might be today. We live in times of healthcare disparities, of food insecurity, of wage and wealth gaps across global and local contexts. We can sow the seeds of systemic change, nurturing and growing conditions that bring to life the healing transformation described in our text… bringing that newness today.

As we do the work of love and justice through our MCCDC and MCC communities, we can be present for each other in our times of joy and sorrow, tending to our suffering, and reminding each other of God’s exuberant love for each of us. And, we may support each other in openness to what newness God has for each of us individually and as a global MCCDC community. How might we notice that newness? How might that newness be transformational?

Please join us Sunday, in-person or by live stream at 9a.m. and 11a.m. and later on demand, as we reflect on and praise God for the gift of transformational newness.

Blessings. Dr. Carla

Pathways 2 Generosity, Prayer #37, by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” Maya Angelou

Dear God, thank you for Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC and all places of spiritual worship who work together harvesting hearts for your Beloved Community. Thank you for the process of faith that continues to evolve as we give generously of our financial gifts, time, talents and treasures to help spread the gospel of Your unconditional love and bringing people into your Beloved Community here on earth.

We are truly blessed, for you sacrificed your only son, Jesus, to die for our sins so that we could have eternal life. Thank you for this gift of your love and generosity! Help us remain committed to continue giving generously of what we have to help expand your Beloved Community.

God, we pray to “aspire to wholeness” in body, mind, and spirit for it is you who have given us the ability to be prosperous. In your many names, we thank you. Amen.

“You shall give to God freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to God, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.” Deuteronomy 15:10 (ESV)
