“The security this world offers is a delusion. The security God offers is a promise.” ~Marilyn Chandler McEntyre
We live in a world where security breaches are an ongoing occurrence. Several times a day messages pop-up on my cell phone and computers with various security alerts or offers to upgrade my security systems. As our world becomes increasingly insecure on multiple fronts, the security industry is lucrative and expanding. As a victim of identity theft, I find the various offers appealing. I never again want to go through the cost and hassle of untangling such a legal mess.
I’ve also dealt with break-ins at two different homes and a stolen car, right out of my garage. However, my experiences are mild compared to many, especially those in war ravaged countries whose lives face daily risk. How do we live with security in an insecure world? Sunday’s scripture from Psalm 112:6 says God’s people “are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord.” The complementary text from 1 Corinthians 2:12 invites us higher: “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God.”
When it comes to security, Jesus calls us to consider a paradox: “Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it” (Luke 17:33). Does this mean we should cancel our virus protection on our electronics? No. I believe we should invest in reasonable security systems. And, with that said, we need to know that true security can’t be bought and the best designed firewalls are ultimately vulnerable.
In the message this Sunday we’ll pose questions to help us reflect on a truer security. Are we protecting or living? Are we closing or opening? Are we holding or releasing? As we wrestle with these questions and others, we are spiritually grounded in Isaiah’s ancient wisdom: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength” (Isaiah 30:15).

Help Us Observe a Spiritually Rich Lent
Lent is almost here-February 26 is Ash Wednesday-and it’s a special opportunity for all the creative, faithful writers (and would-be writers) among us to contribute to our community spiritual life.
Each day during the 40 days of Lent, members and friends will receive a devotional-a story (from your past or even one you create), a meditation on Scripture, a video, a poem, or a reflection about this time in your life and/or our lives together.
The theme for Lent this year is “Entering the Passion of Jesus.” You can choose to write in response to that, or you can choose to tell your truth even if it does not address that theme. The key is to submit it to Rev. Dr. Robin Hawley Gorsline, MCCDC’s Writer/Theologian in Residence, at email@example.com (or you can send it to the church office and they will forward it to him).
Feel free to contact Rev. Robin by email or by phone at 240/565-3441 or email if you have any questions or concerns. And be sure to watch your inbox for your daily inspiration!
