You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
~John 8:32, New Living Translation
Silencing the marginalized is nothing new. In Sunday’s scripture from Mark 10: 46-52, Bartimaeus, a person living without eye sight, is told to shut up. It is not a request. It is a stern order. Bartimaeus shows courageous faith by refusing to be silent. His desire for healing and to change his life is greater than the words of the powerful. Despite all efforts he couldn’t get a job and he was tired of begging. So he told his truth: “Jesus…have mercy on me!” When he faced push back from the crowd, he told his truth again: “Jesus. ..have mercy on me!”
The impact of Bartimaeus telling his truth shifts the trajectory of this story: “Jesus stood still” (Mark 10:49). Then, Jesus invites him to come closer and rather than shutting down the truth, Jesus invites a deeper opening to it: “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus’ response to Jesus’ question is specific and unwavering: “Teacher, I want to see.” Truth becomes an entryway to healing when Jesus says, “Go, your faith has healed you.”
There is more to the story. Upon being healed, Bartimaeus saw not only his immediate surroundings; he saw a new future opening before him. He followed Jesus. The way of Jesus became his way. Arm in arm with Jesus, he would learn even more about the power of truth. He would learn both the cost of truth and the opportunity of truth. Many more lives would be transformed on their shared journey.
Holy Truth Teller, show us daily how the truth will set us free. Help us to convey truth, even when it ruffles feathers or causes disturbance. Help us to know that we are worthy of truth and the wholeness it brings to ourselves and to our world. Amen.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson
Telling Your Truth
Join us Onsite, Online and later On Demand for 9am ET Spiritual Engagement Hour.
This Sunday’s Highlights:
+This week we align our theme for Spiritual Engagement Hour with our theme for worship
+ Our conversation starter for this time of spiritual dialogue is the question, “Why is it important to tell our truths?”
+We’ll reflect on these quotes by E. Carrington Heath from their book Courageous Faith:
“It is always the right time to tell the truth, and to share our stories, but there are times when that sharing is more crucial than ever.”
“When injustice hits particularly close to home, or when people are suffering without hope, we must be willing to tell our truth. More than words, sharing our testimony is a concrete act of resistance. This is especially true if we have been silenced or if others are being silenced.”
“Our silence can indeed equal death, and not just our own. It can mean literal death for our neighbors and fellow citizens.”

So the Council of Elders invite you to join us as we explore what we carry in our ‘spiritual backpack’ on this journey and choose to move from independence to interdependence through listening, prayer, action, and hope. We are indeed stronger together and even stronger with love.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #120
by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
“Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.” ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
Dear God, we are grateful for opportunities to prosper Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC with our financial gifts, talents, time, and treasures. We are thankful for prosperity that you give us in various ways—sunshine, rain, flowers, trees, bountiful gardens, majestic mountains, green valleys, vast oceans, peace within, wisdom, abundance of money, love, good health, and so much more. Thank you for your continuous love and mercy without end.
Thank you for the spirit of generosity and willing hearts to give cheerfully of what we have. We desire to continue growing our faith in you where doubt cannot sway us. Thank you for the courage to confront fear and do the right thing when others insist on doing things their way regardless of dire consequences that may occur. You promised to never leave nor forsake us. Thank you in your precious names! Amen.
“O Lord, how many are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your possessions.” Psalm 104:24 (NKJV)
