For Jesus a seed is not just a seed. For Jesus a seed is a force for life. A seed is hope. A seed is potential and transformation. As seed is a miracle waiting to happen. In Sunday’s Scripture from Mark 4:26-34 Jesus says, “What’s a good image for God’s realm? What parable can I use to explain it? Consider a mustard seed. ..when it’s planted, it grows. ..it produces such large branches that the birds in the sky are able to nest in its shade.”
This Sunday we celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride. We have much to celebrate, including the Supreme Court decision for marriage equality on June 26, 2015 and the landmark workplace protection decision on June 15th of this year. On October 6, 1968 Rev. Elder Troy Perry and the Metropolitan Community Churches planted the seeds for such victories. We celebrate the places LGBTQ+ Pride is flourishing and nourishing. AND. . .our work is unfinished. There are more seeds to plant.
Radical equality demands that LGBTQ+ people expand the vision of justice to include our global siblings that face poverty and violence. Also, gender nonconformists remain hate crime targets and Muslims and those of Arabic descent remain profiled as threats.
Any victories will not be complete until the universal heart unconditionally proclaims: BLACK LIVES MATTER. Every peaceful protest for Black Lives Matter is a seed. Seeds are being planted around the world. George Floyd perhaps did not think of his life as a seed for change, yet change is happening. Will this change be the breakthrough to lasting systemic change? We have a choice in how that question is answered. We have the choice to vote.
As we celebrate another year of Pride, we must not rest. We must remain diligent in our world changing work. Pride celebrations, locally and globally, ensure that voices for justice will continue to resonate. These celebrations inspire hope for those who have not come out. Pride celebrations help create an ongoing vocabulary of mutual respect and understanding.
Our worship this Sunday on Livestream at 9AM and 11AM will offer spiritual inspiration for MCCDC to be a church that is known for its persistent work for breakthroughs in equality.
Peace
Rev.Elder Dwayne Johnson
