This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

Recognize what intersectionality is – Understand that everyone has multiple identities and that we all face unique challenges because of the intersections of our identities.

~Kimberlé Crenshaw

Each of our lives, our very beings, are comprised of many identities that intersect to create our whole selves. This includes our sexuality, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, ability, and more. These areas are the parts of us that together also create what the world outside of ourselves experiences. Along with these identities and intersections, we are also invited to consider how our spirituality and our mental and emotional selves’ impact who we are and what we do. How we treat ourselves and how we treat others are influenced by all of these layers of self. Do we believe we are awesomely and wonderfully made as Psalm 139:14 suggests? Do we listen more closely to the messages of doubt, negative judgement, and hate that seem to get thrown our way so often?

This season of Pride reminds us that we are each God’s creation. We can believe the messages of God’s radically including love for all. We are called to be and do that as well. Be including, and open our hearts, spirits, arms, and our church to welcome and include everyone especially the marginalized. I invite you this Sunday to stop and speak to someone you might not know, or to put chats in the chat box so that we can learn more about each other.

June is also a month of intersections and recognitions. We celebrate Father’s Day to honor all who identify as father figures in someone’s life. Yes, we celebrate those who have served as confidants, bold nurturer, and loving guide to make a positive difference in someone’s life. For who you are we say, “Thank you.” We also acknowledge Juneteenth which is now a federal holiday in the US. This is a day which, according to the Smithsonian, commemorates the end of enslavement of Black people and is celebrated on the anniversary of the order issued on June 19, 1865, to free the enslaved people in Texas.

Pride month, Father’s Day, and Juneteenth each contribute to the fabric and the intersections in our MCCDC community. Let us celebrate, commemorate, and remember each in ways that are both encouraging and challenging. This Sunday we are blessed to participate in the music ministry of Eclectic Praise. Please join your MCCDC family in worship at 9 am ET or 11 am ET, in person, online, or on demand.

Peace,

Rev Cathy Alexander

Associate Pastor

Pathways 2 Generosity, Prayer #65 by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“There is no way to prosperity. Prosperity is the way.” ~~ Wayne Dyer

Dear God, thank you for being a prosperous and generous Creator. We ask that you help us be good stewards of the riches of life you have given us; health, wisdom, love, forgiveness, faith, knowledge, the ability to increase generosity, and so much more. Thank you for the opportunities that help us grow in faith and trust you for all things. You are our provider and protector who will never leave nor forsake us. You are with us when everything is going well, and you are with us when troubling times are hard to bear.

Thank you, God, for the privilege to share generously of our financial gifts with Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, other places of spiritual worship, and helping those in need. We are grateful for the many generous ways that people share their talents, treasures, and time to continue spreading your gospel of unconditional love. We thank you for our spiritual home “without borders” where everyone is welcome. In your many precious names! Amen

“Remember God, Yhwh, who enabled you to produce this wealth, to confirm the covenant that God swore to your ancestors, which is fulfilled today.” Deuteronomy 8:18 (1st Egalitarian Translation)
