Mychal’s Prayer:
“Lord, take me where you want me to go; Let me meet who you want me to meet;
Tell me what you want me to say,and keep me out of Your way.”~ Father Mychal Judge, O.F.M (1933-2001)
I’m finding strength during this time through learning how others have lived through similar though different times. I’ve been reading literature from people of faith who survived previous plagues, wars, holocausts or traumas.
A more recent national and global trauma was 9/11. I’ve been revisiting my worn copy of the biography of Father Mychal Judge. He has been called “The Priest of 9/11.” He also was gay and his death was the first death recorded on the tragic day of September 11, 2001. As a chaplain with the New York Fire Department, he was one of the first on the scene as the Twin Towers were falling. Before being struck by the debris that took his life, he was on-site, praying for the wounded in the name of Jesus. He was living the promise of Jesus from John 17:11, “Holy Creator, protect them. . .” He gave his life to minister and to protect others.
The prayer of Jesus from John 17 is known as the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. This farewell prayer of Jesus, the longest recorded prayer of Jesus in the gospels, is a prayer to protect his beloveds. It is a prayer for all time. It is an eternal prayer for the ages. Today, it strengthens me to know that the prayer of Jesus is for then and now. Today, even at this moment, Jesus is still praying. Jesus is praying for our hearts to be protected and strong. Protected eternally, we do the work of the moment, while also offering hope beyond c19 and other signs of trouble in our times.
We are protected to be protectors. I am glad to wear a mask and to social distance if doing so will protect even one other person. I also am glad to offer prayer and spiritual counsel to others if it will help protect and strengthen them emotionally and spiritually. Protecting others is part of our calling and work at MCCDC. We are called to do this work for such a time as this.
Join your community at MCCDC on LiveStream this Sunday at 9AM and 11AM as we consider the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus and the dimensions of protection therein. See you Sunday at The Stream.
