“God’s Spirit blows wherever it wishes. You hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going. It’s the same with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus was a powerful leader. Well educated and in charge, he thought he had everything under control. Then he met Jesus. He didn’t know that in Jesus he had met someone who would take him beyond all that he had learned as a respected teacher and authority.
Nicodemus tried to wrap his head around the concept of being “born anew” as stated by Jesus. Jesus responded not with clever rhetorical device, but by inviting Nicodemus to a new place. The invitation from Jesus was for Nicodemus to touch something true, a deeper truth, beyond all the truth he thought he knew.
After Nicodemus met Jesus there was no turning back. The truth rising within him kept rising. It is like Jesus took him to another place—a Spirit place, a place where the eternally living realm of God transports human lives beyond previous limitations.
Nicodemus was astute in the teaching of the prophets. Now, his encounter with Jesus led him to not just know about them, but to experience them. Nicodemus was rebirthed to stand with Isaiah, as God filled the Holy Temple with quaking and sacred presence like an all-consuming fire. The voices from heaven shout to one another: “Holy! Holy! Holy is the Lord God of heavenly powers! All the earth is filled with God’s glory!” (Isaiah 6:3).
In my message this Sunday at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM we will reflect further on Nicodemus and Isaiah and their experience of Rising True to power beyond themselves. We too will be invited to experience power beyond ourselves, and be born again to a new place where the Spirit leads beyond and through.
Also, beginning this Sunday and through the month of June, we celebrate the Season of Pridetide at MCCDC. Throughout the season our hearts will touch sacred pride as we rise to our truest, most courageous selves.
