This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

I will ask the One who sent me to give you another Advocate, another Helper to be with you always – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept since the world neither discerns her nor recognizes her; but you can recognize the Spirit because she remains with you and will be within you. ~Jesus speaking in John 14: 16-17, First Egalitarian Translation

This Sunday we will acknowledge the High Holy Day of Pentecost and the transition from the great 50 days of Easter. In Acts 2: 1-21 Peter’s prophetic wisdom is evident as he speaks out on the day of Pentecost. This is just after the followers of Christ receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit in a way that signifies the Spirit is with them for all times yet in a way that was noisy. To explain what is happening, Peter quotes scripture. The words of the Prophet Joel add some wisdom to what’s going on to help curious by-standers understand since they were intrigued by the commotion and noise.

I will pour out my Spirit on all humankind.

Your daughters and sons will prophesy,

Your young people will have visions,

And your elders will dream dreams.

Even on the seemingly insignificant of my people,

I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

The landing of the Holy Spirit in this account was very public and noisy and chaotic and messy. An inward event, yes. A milestone for the entire spiritual community, yes. A fulfillment of a promise, yes as well. Jesus promised to send a companion, a helper, a comforter, and a guide in the form of the Holy Spirit.

Oh, how we need comforting, companioning, guiding and advocacy today. We find ourselves in situations that challenge our minds, our spirits, and our very beings. On Sunday we will explore the challenge of remaining grounded in times that try our faith while imagining the possibilities of what can be. No matter your age or our stage in the journey, we have the potential to have visions, dream dreams, and use our prophetic expressions to bring about the world God has for us right now. Please join your MCCDC family virtually at 9 am or 11 am ET or on demand.

Peace,

Rev Cathy Alexander
