This Week’s Reflection

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion. Sing aloud, Daughter Jerusalem. Look, royalty will come to you. Righteous and victorious.
Humble and riding on a colt, the offspring of a donkey.”~Zechariah 9:9

This Sunday acknowledges Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem amidst the crowds and placing of palms. Palms were waived and voices were raised in loud Hosannas as he rode down the street. It was as if people were saying… finally, here comes someone to save us from the oppression of Rome, to save us from the suppressive regulations of the religious officials, to save us from anyone that would keep us from determining the course of our own lives and relationships to God and each other.

Just after Christmas, the days of Kwaanza are celebrated in many African American households. The second principle of Kwaanza is Kujichagulia, which is self-determination. It is the notion that we must be free to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. The people in the scripture story wanted such freedom to determine the course of their own lives, free from the oppressor’s restrictions.

The people portrayed in the book of Mark seemingly sped from place to place with Jesus. They experienced him healing, feeding, teaching, fishing. They continued to question if he was the Messiah, the coming One. They had a particular idea of him as regal Messiah and one who would throw off the restrictive occupying force. Jesus, however, peacefully went about his life and ministry yet in a way that was driven and purposed.

With Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem in Mark 11:1-11, the time had come to set the events of this holy week in motion. A regal, triumphant, humbled entry into the city. Let us too take the time to recognize Jesus and sing loud hosannas to him. Let us invite him to enter the cities of our hearts, bringing on a spiritual shakeup this week.

Join your MCCDC family via livestream on YouTube or Facebook this Sunday at 9:00 or 11:00 a.m. Eastern. Please let us know you are present by checking in via the chat box.
