“I believe that each of us comes from the Creator trailing wisps of glory.”
~Maya Angelou

This coming Sunday is the 7th Sunday of Easter. Our theme for “The Great 50 Days of Easter” is Living Big. This coming Sunday is also Mother’s Day, which has me thinking of mothers that live big. My mother and both my grandmothers model what it means to live big, especially through their generosity, courage and love.

Considering mothers whose public lives are an inspiration, Maya Angelou comes to mind and heart. Many of her writings are a call to live transformative values with courage. As a mother of courage, Maya Angelou leaves an enduring legacy as a champion for education, human rights, economic justice and the arts.

Her writings reflect her belief that all are born through the love of the Creator, “trailing wisps of glory.” Our purpose in life is to move from being “wisps” of glory into the fullness of glory. By “Living Big” into who God has created us to be, we bring love into the world.

Living Big includes praying big. Our scripture this Sunday from John 17: 6-19 includes Jesus praying, “Holy Creator, protect them. . .” (v11). The prayer of Jesus to protect his beloveds is a prayer for all time. It is an eternal prayer for the ages. Jesus prays for our hearts to be protected and strong. Protected eternally, we are released to do the difficult work of the moment, offering hope in a world where there is so much destruction.

This Sunday we will honor and remember our mothers. If you are a mother, please come so we can honor you. All mothers will receive a special gift of love and appreciation. See you Sunday at 9 AM and 11 AM.

By Faith, Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson
