This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

“God is your refuge. There is nothing that can separate you from God, or could keep God from gathering you in, protecting you fiercely. No matter how much we try to separate ourselves from God, God will run to protect us. God’s love for us is fuller than we can imagine.” ~ Ashley DeTar Birt

When I think of being full to the brim, I immediately think of the heart of Jesus. Jesus lived with a full heart, a heart longing for and extending reconciliation. Jesus sees the pain of people, including the pain of separation. In our scripture for Sunday from Luke 13:31-35 Jesus laments, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem… How often I have wanted to gather your people just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you didn’t want that.”

Jesus, courageous and vulnerable, wanted more than others were willing to give. Yet he continued his long, courageous movement of unconditional love. Even when his love was not returned, Jesus showed the way to fullness through his generous and abundant heart.

The life of Jesus was the deepest expression of God’s own heart. Is it possible that God could be vulnerable enough to feel what the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay describes when she writes, “They say when you are missing someone that they are probably feeling the same, but I don’t think it’s possible for you to miss me as much as I’m missing you right now.” Could God be missing you and longing for you at this moment?

Our hearts are designed to love God and others. We live with fullness when God’s loving presence becomes our first priority. Then, filled to the brim, we share that loving presence with others. This Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Eastern on livestream—and later on demand—we’ll worship in Love’s Presence.

Grace & Peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson
