This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

“What God has planned for us is more than eyes have seen or ears have heard. It has never even entered our minds.”
~ 1 Corinthians 2:9, Common English Version, alt.

Some have put their aspirations on hold during c19, simply trying to get through each day. That is often true for those who mourn, whatever the reason may be. When Flora Slosson Wuellner received news that her beloved’s cancer, many years in remission, had returned, it was a jolt to her spiritual balance. It was difficult for her to see or think of anything else. She wrote: “. . . it seems unbelievable that the sun rises and sets, traffic keeps rolling, and thousands go about their own business—even though our own sun stands still, and everything for us suddenly stops. Is there anyone who really hears or cares? ”(Miracle: When Christ Touches Our Deepest Need, 20).

Trying circumstances are so potent that it is difficult to see anything else. The surface disturbance can be so intense, it is difficult to imagine or see that God is at work. It is difficult to look up, to look beyond, to aspire. It may be difficult to comprehend that God is moving on a deeper level, beyond the surface, at the foundation of all that is grace. Does God hear our cries for mercy and help?

In the message this Sunday from Mark 10: 46-51 Bartimaeus shouts out to Jesus, “Heir of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:48). Bartimaeus is blind and is tired of relying on others for his sustenance. With Jesus, he receives the miracle of spiritual vision to see beyond his circumstances to the possibility of healing. With hope, he calls out. Yet even as he calls out Bartimaeus can’t help but wonder, “Will Jesus hear me? If so, will he care?” The turning point comes when Jesus answers the questions with a question: “What do you want me to do for you?” The compassionate question from Jesus to Bartimaeus is a question with staying power. It is as relevant today as it was then. How do you answer the question from Jesus?

This Sunday we’ll reflect further on God’s healing heart as revealed through Jesus. God has more planned for us than we can imagine for ourselves. Like Bartimaeus, we too can receive what Jesus offers and become free to aspire. In preparation for Sunday, I invite you to join me in lingering with this question from Jesus: “What do you want me to do for you?”

The Board of Directors is looking for motivated and qualified candidates to run for seats on the Board of Directors this year. Two positions will be open due to term expirations in 2021. We are looking for a diverse group of people with the spiritual gifts of leadership, discernment, and compassion. We are especially looking for people with practical experience in strategic planning, financial management/fundraising/legacy planning, policy development, program oversight, or legal matters.

If you feel called and have been a member of MCCDC in good standing for the past six months, you are eligible to run. Please submit a brief bio and a letter of interest to the Board and the church office by Sunday, October 17th.

You are also encouraged to talk to Senior Pastor Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson or Board Member Knut Panknin if you have questions or would like to receive more information.
