This Week’s Reflection
Teach me thy grace in the daily work by which I earn my keep and the keep of those dependent upon me. Teach me thy grace. ~“Teach Me Thy Grace,” from Dr. Howard Thurman’s Meditations of the Heart
Our current theme is “Living Grace”. What does it mean to have Living Grace? I’m learning Spanish with the assistance of my partner Dr. Carla which reminds me of lessons in High School and College French. I learned the value of remembering several action words that would richly help me to try to be in communication with others as I searched my memory for the correct word. They included past present and future forms of the verbs “to have”, “to go”, “to be”, “to want”. As I try out different phrases on my partner, and on my MCC supervisor, who is from Mexico, I search for a suitable verb to convey my meaning. It causes me to slow down and think about what is being said and communicated. In a sense that slowing down for me is a form a grace.
The great theologian and communicator, Dr. Howard Thurman, speaks about communicating grace in one of his meditations. “Look well to the growing edge. All around us, worlds are dying, and new worlds are being born. All around us, life is dying, and life is being born. The fruit ripens on the tree, the roots are silently at work in the [shadow] of the earth against a time when there shall be new leaves, fresh blossoms, green fruit. Such is the growing edge.” What ‘growing edges’ exist for each of us as we journey towards hope and fresh blossoms in our lives? Respectful communication? Kind gifts of service? Self-care? Finding ways to stay in respectful conversation even when we disagree?
We are called to consider what it means to have and be “Living Grace” each day and in relationship with each other. Our Gospel lesson for Sunday is from Matthew 15 verses 10-20. Jesus again tussles with the religious teachers of his day, and breaks things down for his disciples regarding ritual, ceremony, and speech. Please join your MCCDC family in worship at 9 am ET or 11 am ET, in person, online, or on demand.
Peace,
Rev Cathy Alexander
Associate Pastor

“O momentary grace of mortal men, which we more hunt for than the grace of God!” William Shakespeare
Dear God, we reverence your Infinite grace, the most precious gift you gave us through the death of your precious Son, Jesus Christ, who died for the forgiveness of our sins. Every breath we breathe is by your grace and each moment of our life exists because of You. No human, however great or famous can match this gift. God, we are grateful that your grace helps us deal with grief when we are overwhelmed, and during seasons of happiness too. Help us to remember that we are saved by grace when we fail, and to remember it much more when we succeed in our endeavors. You provide for our every need.
Thank you for Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, and all spiritual worship spaces. Because of your grace, we are able to perform great works in your name, spreading the gospel all over the world through the use of modern technology. We are grateful for the opportunities to magnify your love and grace within us and to help people in need. We pray to continue growing in faith, and prosperity; and to share generously of all treasured gifts you grant us. In your many precious names, we are made rich in every way! Amen.
“There are no limits to the grace of God, who will make sure you will always have enough of everything and even a surplus for good works, as scripture says: God scattered abroad, and gave to poor people; God’s justice endures forever “ . . . “You will be made rich in every way for your generosity, for which we give thanks to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:8-9, 11
