“We are true to ourselves and true to you, O God, without apology. Shaped by intimate, healthy relationships with God, we begin to see and know and learn differently. We learn to like and love ourselves, seeing our illumined beauty. As our love for self grows, we are able to see fully who we are and whose we are: we belong to God, and God endows us with self-worth. Amen.” ~Cheryl A. Kirk-Duggan, Soul Pearls

Our scripture for Sunday from Mark 8:31-38 includes an often misunderstood statement from Jesus: “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.” Some have misapplied the meaning to include self-flagellation and self-abuse in various forms, such as wearing hairshirts. This is the “sackcloth and ashes” approach to spirituality. A milder interpretation of Jesus’ words is behind the idea of “giving up” something for Lent, such as chocolate.

The true meaning of this invitation from Jesus is to live with determined love. The call of Jesus is to choose each day whom we will serve: the values of our dominant consumer/power cultures (the values of empire) or the values that bring heaven on earth.

To live with determined love is to live a focused yes rather than a confining no. To live with determined love is to evaluate our habits and ask ourselves which habits are bringing more love into our lives. Are there some habits which may be causing harm? Determined love also looks at our relationships, reminding us to prioritize people over stuff. Determined love challenges our assumptions, inviting us to creative inquiry about what matters most. Determined love mobilizes action for the good of ourselves and others.

Jesus asks a question in Mark 8:36: “Why would people gain the world but lose their lives?” That is one of the most important questions we can ponder. Some spend a lifetime sacrificing relationships for career advancement. They have gained the “world” and maybe even respect. Yet such “success” is disconnected from true joy and fulfillment. The life of Jesus was given to saving lives. He showed the better way, saving people from ego and its trappings into lives of meaning grounded in determined love.

Sunday at 9a.m. and 11a.m. on live stream we’ll reflect together on love that makes a way.

By Faith,
Rev. Elder Dwayne
