This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

“God is in the advent wilderness of this holy season. God knows what I look like in my bathrobe, all alone late at night. And never once has God suggested that the sight is pathetic. Instead, in those empty hours God says, ‘Talk to me. Then be still and know that I am God.’” ~ Anne Marie Drew

This Sunday at MCCDC we will observe the Second Sunday of Advent. We are excited to welcome Rev. David North to bring the message From Matthew 3:1-12. Rev. North will help us consider the voice of John the Baptist calling from the wilderness. It is a voice of peace. Yet the peace is not cheap. It is peace that comes with the cost of being willing to change. John the Baptist’s invitation is edgy, direct, and not sugar coated: “Repent, for the realm of heaven has come near.”

To repent is to turn away from all that stands in the way of living our best lives. To repent is to turn towards change. A contemporary paraphrase of John the Baptist is the oft repeated quote: “The choices you make define who you are.”

Through our choices, wilderness places can be transformed. Today’s wilderness may be the desert of a busy office, or in the midst of a shopping mall, or in the tension of a classroom where disagreement seems to bounce off the walls. Or, wilderness may seem disguised by a favorite chair in a cozy den.

Join us Sunday at 9a.m. and 11a.m. Eastern in the Sanctuary, online or later on demand. To prepare for Sunday:

PRAYER: God, with your help I seek joy and peace in the wilderness places. May my searching be both inward and outward, a turn to wholeness for myself and others. Amen.

ACTION: Reflect on this quote from Henri Nouwen, especially the questions: “Only one thing seems clear to me. Every day should be well lived. What a simple truth! Still, it is worth my attention. Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of anger and resentments? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions! I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and in the life

Grace and peace,

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Pathways 2 Generosity, Prayer #41, by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“It’s what you sow that multiplies, not what you keep in the bank.” — Adrian Rogers

Dear God, we are grateful for the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, where we can worship in person or online. Thank you for the audio/visual teams and the technology that enables us and all spiritual places of worship to spread the good tidings of your love and grace throughout the world “harvesting hearts” for your beloved community.

We are grateful that you bless us to sow and multiply good works in serving others so that your love is glorified through us as a shining light. We desire to continue being a cheerful giver, and trust you to supply all our needs as we share generously of our spiritual gifts and material possessions to accomplish the mission set before us. Thank you in your many names. Amen!

“Now may [the Creator] who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness.” 2nd Corinthians 9:10 (NIV)
