This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

“We may want to turn off the noise and hope for some much needed peace. But now is not the time to reach for a sedative—whether over the counter, prescribed from a physician, or even from comfortable faith. Now is the time to pay attention, careful attention to those around us, careful attention to our own hearts, and careful attention to those we disagree with most often.” ~Rev. Elder Troy Treash, Resurrection MCC

Where do you find your strength? The scripture for this Sunday from Colossians 1:15-20 describes the strengthening power of Christ, the One existing “Before anything was created” (v17). This One before creation is working now for “all things to be reconciled to God” (v20) even when it appears so much is falling apart.

Colossians posits that Christ is at the center, and the center holds: indeed this loving, saving, Center holds us and strengthens us. From the Center, we are empowered to harvest strength and share it with others. We extend courage, conviction and hope to a world gasping and grasping for hope.

From the Center, this place of strength, we become part of what Christ has been doing all along: saving lives. And that’s why MCCDC exists: to save lives. People are bound by fear on multiple fronts, bound by division, and bound by consumer culture that skews our sense of self-worth and our God-given instinct for generosity. At MCCDC we offer a message of freedom and salvation.

In preparation for Sunday, reflect on the question: “Where do you find your strength?” As you prayerfully ponder that question, consider Nan Merrill’s paraphrase of Psalm 46:

• “God is our refuge and strength, a Loving Presence in time of trouble.
• Therefore we need not fear though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. . .
• Be still and know that I am love. Awaken! Befriend justice and mercy.
• Do you not know you bear my love? Who among you will respond?”

Grace and peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Pathways 2 Generosity, Prayer #37, by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” Maya Angelou

Dear God, thank you for Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC and all places of spiritual worship who work together harvesting hearts for your Beloved Community. Thank you for the process of faith that continues to evolve as we give generously of our financial gifts, time, talents and treasures to help spread the gospel of Your unconditional love and bringing people into your Beloved Community here on earth.

We are truly blessed, for you sacrificed your only son, Jesus, to die for our sins so that we could have eternal life. Thank you for this gift of your love and generosity! Help us remain committed to continue giving generously of what we have to help expand your Beloved Community.

God, we pray to “aspire to wholeness” in body, mind, and spirit for it is you who have given us the ability to be prosperous. In your many names, we thank you. Amen.

“You shall give to God freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to God, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.” Deuteronomy 15:10 (ESV)
