This week we begin a new worship series, Learning to Move in the Dark. The series is based on, and utilizes the writings of, Barbara Brown Taylor’s book, “Learning to Walk in the Dark.”

Spiritually, Light and Darkness appear at the very beginning of the Hebrew Scriptures in Genesis, both as wondrous parts of God’s creation. Yet, Taylor reminds us of how much darkness is associated/equated with evil and fear, and light with what is good, with support and rescue. She cautions us against simply going with this “opposed pairs” perspective and encourages us to work with our fears by engaging practices that allow us to embrace and be guided by darkness, as well as by light. She proposes and explores the richness of a lunar spirituality, one of waxing and waning phases of divine light that are filled with the lessons and offerings of darkness.

Taylor says that each of us has a personal history of the dark and shares hers with us through narratives of her physical lived experiences, some long past during childhood, and others more recent. Our expansion of the title of her book from “walking” to
“moving” connects well to this approach of storying her development of intentional relationship with darkness as it occurs through her body—through her senses in relationship and in interaction with nature. The uniqueness of her experiences offer reminders to consider the differences, as well as similarities, in how we are able to, and how we choose to navigate the world in stillness and movement, physically and spiritually. To consider how we each define, experience, and understand states and phases of darkness and light, physically and spiritually.

Join us this Sunday at 9:00 and/or 11:00 a.m. Eastern as we contemplate how our faith, our ways of being, and our lives might shift as we learn to move in the dark.
