“The psalmist reminds readers to be grateful for the many different times and ways the Lord God has led them. The psalmist reminds us of the desert places from which we’ve been delivered and the lean times when God has been faithful to provide. The memories are meant to invoke in us gratitude for all the Lord has done for us.” ~Devonna R. Allison
Psalm 107 weaves together the promises of God. It describes the promise of God to be with those who are wandering in the wilderness, those who are bound, those who are ill, and those who are caught in stormy waters. Psalm 107 does not promise that our lives will be free of trouble. God’s promise is to be with us in the midst of trouble. God has the power to turn trouble into good trouble: “God’s mercies endure forever.” (v. 1)

Even when our own choices lead us into trouble, God’s mercy meets us there. The theme of mercy is strong in The Talmud, a collection of commentaries on scripture by ancient rabbis. One of the teachings is that God prays a prayer of mercy for three hours a day: “May it be my will that my mercy may suppress my anger, and that my compassion may prevail over my other attributes.” God keeps God’s promises: “God’s mercy endures forever!”

Closely connected to God’s mercy is God’s redeeming love. In Psalm 107:2 the poet exclaims: “let the redeemed of the Lord say so!” Like the Psalmist, we are called to bear witness to redemption and to tell our stories of how God has showed up in our lives. From all directions the people, redeemed from captivity, sing songs of renewal and hope. The people are released into the free land of the forgiven. The people are released into open spaces of faith. Again, they proclaim the promise: “God’s mercy endures forever!”

Join us this Sunday at 10:30 AM Eastern on-site, on-line or later on-demand as we reflect on the promises of our loving and merciful God.

Through Grace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #152

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“Meditation, the quiet zone of peace and reflection, a space for introspection and rumination . . . a tranquil Zen moment to ponder and render rapt attention to our inner world where everything is first perceived.” ~ Clara
Dear God, thank you for the generous gift of time. We are grateful to wake each day and face the choice of whom we will serve “good” or “evil.” We pray to choose the good always to celebrate the gift of eternal life that you gave through your Son, Christ Jesus, who took on our sins and was sacrificed that we would be free from the sting of death. May we use the precious time granted to each of us to spread the good news of the gospel to everyone, and reflect your goodness from within our hearts as would a bright light set high on a hill that shines in the darkest of places.

We are grateful for opportunities to share generously of our financial abundance, talents, skills, time, and treasures toward building a beloved community of gathering more souls for your spiritual realm and helping ones in need. We cheerfully receive the gift of life to practice being kind and respectful of God’s whole creation in all its beautiful expressions and forms. And thank you God for the freedom to worship You from our hearts wherever we may be at any given time, even if only a whispered, “THANK YOU.” We praise you, in your many precious names! Amen.

“Happiness comes to those who reject the path of violence, who refuse to associate with criminals or even to sit with people who belittle others. Happiness comes to those who delight in the Law of Yhwh and meditate on it day and night. They are like trees planted by flowing water—they bear fruit every season, and their leaves never wither: everything they do will prosper.” Psalm 1:1-3 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
