“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” ~Acts 1:8
Like the earlier followers of Jesus, we need power from beyond ourselves, power from the Holy Spirit. In the mystery of our faith, the power from the Holy Spirit becomes the power from within. Through such power we are a people of courage, individually and collectively. As many around us crumble with fear, we will move through fear.
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, fifty days after Easter Sunday and ten days after the Day of Ascension. At the first Pentecost the Holy Spirit moved in a mighty way. The Holy Spirit gave those gathered unique abilities to bear witness to the fullness of God. “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4). Through this power of the Holy Spirit the church was born and the world was changed forever—and is still changing. From that first Pentecost, people continue to rise up to work for justice, equality, and shared prosperity.
This Sunday is also our MCCDC World Pride Service. This music infused service will feature the Reimagine Ensemble and Special Guest David Underwood. The theme is Pride Song & Spirit.
At our 10:30 AM ET service on-site, on-line and on-demand we’ll lift songs that will empower us to live with courageous conviction and action. The world needs the courage of communities like MCCDC. We are called to grow in our effectiveness through the power of God as exercised through the Holy Spirit.
Sunday’s engagement will move beyond our walls. While many will be worshiping on-site, on-line and on-demand, we’ll also have folx beyond our walls setting up for the World Pride Street Festival that runs from Noon to 10 PM.
In preparation for Pentecost and Pride, I invite you to join me in praying this prayer by Susan Muto:
“Come, Holy Spirit, and radiate through our finitude the infinite goodness and mercy of God. Teach us to see in every obstacle a formation opportunity. Lead us to eternal peace and joy in oneness with the Trinity. Amen.”
By Faith,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #144
by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
“The movement of the Spirit of God in the hearts of men and women often calls them to act against the spirit of their times or causes them to anticipate a spirit which is yet in the making. In a moment of dedication, they are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires.” — Howard Thurman>
Dear God, thank you for all you do for us, with us, and through us. We are committed to continue spreading the good news of your enduring gifts of love, wisdom, mercy, compassion and forgiveness throughout the world. We pray to remain a shining light of your goodness that shines in the darkest corners of the earth and all people will come to know that you are God of all creation. We are grateful for Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, and all spiritual places of worship gathering souls for your realm. Thank you for the enduring gifts of generosity that inspire us to share talents, skills, financial gifts, time, and treasures for the work you have ordained us to perform for your glory. We shout hallelujah and claim the victory in your many names. Amen!
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear siblings, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” I Corinthians 15: 57-58 (NIV)
