This Week’s Reflection

Then, to Thomas, Jesus said, “Take your finger and examine my hands. Put your hand into my side. Don’t persist in your unbelief but believe!” Thomas said in response, “My Savior and my God!” Jesus then said, “You’ve become a believer because you saw me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” ~John 20:27-29 (The Inclusive Bible, First Egalitarian Translation)
In the scripture text for this Sunday (John 20:19-29), Jesus appears to the disciples after the crucifixion. Thomas, one of the disciples, is not present. When the disciples tell Thomas that they have seen Jesus, he expresses that he will not believe that they have seen the risen Jesus unless he touches his wounds. Thus, the expression “Doubting Thomas.” According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a “Doubting Thomas” is “a person who refuses to believe something until they are shown personal, physical proof. It refers to a habitually skeptical person who requires evidence rather than taking things on faith.”
Thomas, I believe, was a realist, and not someone who lacked faith. People view things in different ways, and we all sometimes have doubts or don’t believe something until we have some type of proof. In questioning, we are seeking answers. People are sometimes shamed by others and accused of having a lack of faith because they question instead of just accepting on face value. But Jesus meets us where we are, without blaming or shaming, especially in those times of uncertainty, in those times when we are looking for answers.
Holy One, thank you for meeting us where we are, for loving us, and for being with us even in those times when we are seeking. Thank you for the assurance of faith that we can have in your presence and in your promises. Amen.

Peace and Blessings!
Rev. Jo-Anne Ludy
