This Week’s Reflection

“Whether we want to or not, whether we notice or not, whether we’re intentional about it or not, we spiritually impact the world we live in.” ~Debi Thomas +
The Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7 includes the essential teachings of Jesus. It is overflowing with descriptions, metaphors, invitations to being and calls to doing. Contemplation and action are woven together. This sermon by Jesus is so powerful and expansive that it would take more than a lifetime to explore its depths.
This Sunday we’ll explore a simple description that Jesus uses to describe his followers, then and now: “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5: 13). We’ll consider why this metaphor was important to Jesus. We’ll look at salt’s healing, transformative, and flavoring qualities and the implications for our lives together. We are salt as individuals and community. Remembering who we are is a key to live out our continuing call.
Salt is so simple and common, it is easy to overlook it. Yet there is power in even the smallest grain of salt. Jesus often pointed to the small and the overlooked to describe the spiritual vision of the new realm.
As I move to retirement after this Sunday, I know that God has great plans for MCCDC in the seasons ahead. Those here now and those to come will continue the call, in the spirit of the Sermon on the Mount and other powerful scriptures that show us the way. Join us on-site or on-line at 10:30AM Eastern.
In preparation for this Sunday, please join me in this prayer:
“Holy God, we thank you for the journeys we have shared and the journeys yet to come. You have guided us in the past, and we trust your guidance for the future. You give us assurance that your plans for us are good plans. Remind us to ask for guidance one moment at a time, and then act on the guidance you give. Amen.”
Beloved Community, know that my heart will remain close to you as I remember you in prayer through all my days.

By Faith,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #165

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
(Reference: Proverbs 3:5-10, NKJV)
“. . . when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. That your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. Matthew 6:3-4 (NKJV)
Dear God, thank you for the gift of trust that your Holy Spirit instilled within us that helps to trust you wholly in all things. We are grateful for the Holy Spirit who guides and commune with us in Your ways that we do not understand. You know the desires of our hearts and provide everything that we need. We desire to remain confident in your guidance and not stand on our knowledge alone, even when tempted to do so.
We are grateful for your everlasting love, unlimited forgiveness, and loving mercies that descend on us each waking minute of our lives. Help us to honor our bodies and health by taking good care of ourselves with all that you have blessed us. We pray to always be grateful for your generosity. May we honor your blessings by sharing our spiritual joy and physical possessions with others according to your purpose for us.
We are grateful for spaces of spiritual worship throughout the world. We desire to be like a light placed high on a hill that reflect your grace, mercy, forgiveness, and wisdom and welcome everyone into your beloved community, a community that encompasses multi-cultural, multi-race, and multi-gender communities everywhere, so vibrant as the rich colors of a rainbow in the sky.
Thank you, God for your generosity bestowed on us. Thank you, in your many precious names! Amen
