“You are my hope, O God.” ~Psalm 71:5
The prophet Jeremiah was called by God during the captivity of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. In the midst of fear and upheaval, God gave Jeremiah the spiritual authority to proclaim hope: “Look, I have put my words in your mouth! Today I appoint you to rise up against nations and realms” (Jeremiah 1:10). God gives spiritual authority to various leaders. Other times, God calls communities to mobilize spiritual authority. I believe God is calling MCCDC to bear prophetic witness to hope.

Even in the midst of occupation the District of Columbia is a city of hope. As Jackie Lois shared at Noon Prayer today: “We are a city of refuge.” MCCDC is a place of hope in the city of hope. Each day people turn to us for comfort, joy, and compassion. Our ministry is global through our on-line and on-demand ministries. Those struggling with insomnia turn to our services to worship and pray in the middle of the night.

Where is God in this? The image that comes to my heart is Jesus weeping over Jerusalem saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on very side” (Luke 19: 41-43).

I picture divine tears for the people of Gaza, Ukraine, Burkina Faso, and Maynmar.

Sally Brown writes, “There will be times when the anguish of God claims us for bold word and action. Only God’s promise to sustain us will make such work bearable.” MCCDC is called to do such work. God’s promise will empower and sustain us.

God spoke to Jeremiah to free him from the limitations of fear: “Do not be afraid of them for I am with you to deliver you” (Jeremiah 1:8).

Holy One, help us today to rise up and claim our spiritual authority. Help us to be witnesses to hope. Remind us that even small acts of compassion are used by You to create a ripple effect of hope. Remind us that we are not too young, too old, too small or too limited to open ourselves to do what You’ve called us to do. Amen.

By Faith,

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #155

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“Those moments you fail are not the end, they are periods in which you recollect thoughts, ideas, and ambitions, and change direction.” ~ Benjamin Chapin
Dear God, create in us a clean heart and daily renew our minds to trust You during chaotic periods and not become complacent in peaceful times. In your generous mercy and forgiveness, lead us through the path that is now before us. Let not our feet stray away from your purpose for us as a beloved community. Thank you, God, for generously creating everyone in your image, a plethora of different races, different genders and ethnicities to commune with You and with each other. You created all living beings—plants, animals, and humans; and you said “It was good.”

We thank you for you mercy and grace that we are born into this world with the privilege of inheriting eternal life. We pray to remain loyal to your word for this gift that is given us. We are grateful for the opportunities to spread your love and the gospel to everyone, and to share wisely with people in need. We praise you for the willingness to share generously of our talents, time, financial abundance, and treasures in worship with You, and the gathering of souls into your spiritual realm. In your many precious names, may we let your Holy Light shine through us in every act undertaken to perform your great works. Thank you, God, for our journey of life on earth! Amen.

“Don’t open your heart to envy of those who sin, but be constant in fear [respect and trust] of Ywhw—for you are part of what is to become, and your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 24:16 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
