This Week’s Reflection

On Sunday we celebrate Pentecost and the founding of the Christian church. Read the story here. The disciples spent hours deep in prayer after Jesus was lifted up into the heavens. I’m curious about what they prayed for so fervently. Strength and courage? An end to Roman oppression? Wisdom and knowledge?

All the things we need in our prayer lives today as individuals and community. We need strength and courage to withstand attacks to our very existence as God’s creation, as children of God. We need strength and courage to exist in community as we continue to move forward during this time of transition. Although we are in transition, we are not in limbo. Our community can be engaged and vibrant as we make it so.

We need fervent prayer to end oppression as we work to resist oppression in all its forms. To resist we must learn to recognize it no matter how overt or subtle it is. Jesus tells his followers in Matthew 10:16, “Be aware, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves.

Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” We must learn about vertical and horizontal oppression and how to dismantle its far-reaching impacts on each of us personally and as a community of faith. We must develop tools to care and confront, to hold in careful heart and to hold to accountability. All are necessary in the community of faith.

As we celebrate and recognize the fire and wind of Pentecost, let us each take a moment to breathe and thank God for the Holy Spirit breath of life, spiritual wisdom, and the ability to love. May we too develop the boldness we need to speak out and share about the amazing God of connection, the God miracles, the God of the now and the God of the future.
