Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #164

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
A Letter to God Regarding Thoughts on Prosperity (Confession of a Layperson)
Dear God, I hated (truly disliked) being born in an impoverish environment into a community that suffered lack and uncertainty. As a young child, I sought to find a reason for being born into such an impoverish environment. I read that your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior was born into such a dismal environment too. But differently from me, our Savior did not wallow in self-pity. He knew of Your generosity and abundant prosperity, claimed them as needed and performed miracles throughout his life on earth.
As an adolescent, to validate my poverty mind, I wondered if I had lived another life in another time period where maybe I had been unappreciative of your generosity. There were fleeting moments I thought to have grasped some prosperity principle and ran with it only to realize that I had missed the mark, perchance through failing to proceed according to God’s purpose for my life, or on some lofty idea that I would finally reached the pinnacle that could lead to untold wealth (loads of money). And, at that time, I had no clear plans on how I would use it except for bragging rights. How naive!
According to my understanding, too long I thought that prosperity was about having plenty of money beyond my basic needs—that wealth and riches were synonymous with prosperity. I have since learned prosperity not only encompass wealth and riches but that it includes inner peace, spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health, wisdom, faith, perseverance and a belief that all things with God are possible even in the face of doubts that may arise.
Over the years, I begin to recognize that God speaks to us not only in a quiet still voice, or through others but also by presenting opportunities too that sometimes test our trust and faith.
“Give us this day our daily bread…”[Matthew 6:11]. God has given me ideas [daily bread] throughout my life, and I pooh, pooh many of them because I thought those ideas were unlikely to become real, or I was afraid to try because of some misconceived image of failure bolstered by low-self-esteem. In another light, failing (with its dismal connotations) can be viewed as a stepping stone—another opportunity that could lead me to regroup and begin again.
Practicing good stewardship of God’s spiritual and physical prosperity helps to share generously of God’s abundance through contributions of financial treasures, talents and time to further spread the gospel throughout the earth, gather souls for God’s Kin-dom, maintain spiritual worship spaces, and help communities where needed. God, I am grateful for all that You are. Thank you, in your many precious names! Amen.
“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” I Timothy 6:18-19 (NIV)
