This Week’s Reflection

“In the stillness of the quiet, if we listen to the Spirit, we can hear the whisper of the heart giving strength to weakness, courage to fear, hope to despair.” ~ Howard Thurman
On this Sunday we will recognize the ascension of Jesus. As we come towards the end of Eastertide and the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, we pause with the disciples to see Jesus leave the earth and ascend to heaven.

Throughout his brief ministry on earth in bodily form, Jesus has been a teacher, guide, rabble rouser, companion, even an enigma, to those he encountered on his journey. His ministry was one of embodiment, presence, and relationship. Showing others how an up close and personal relationship with God could be. One of invitation rather than one that is stiff, stand offish, and condemning.

Because he will not be present in bodily form any longer, Jesus tells of a promised one, the Holy Spirit to be a companion, guide, friend, and more.

Each of us has access to this promised Holy Spirit, commonly referred to as the breath of God. This life breathed into us by God. In these times when it can feel that our breath has been taken away by so many events and circumstances, the Holy Spirit can lead, guide, and be that breath that moves us back to God. So many circumstances today seem to move us backwards in time, human rights being trampled, values no longer respected, and the powerful seem to disregard and cast aside people who are outside of the power structure.

Where can we find respite, respect, and relief? Acts 1:8 notes “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you”. We will receive power to face what confronts us, power to move through life, power to confront difficult circumstances, and the power to love.

We can use this power to resist evil in all of its forms, and to work for justice and equity. God can and will use each of us for God’s purpose as we move around in our bodily forms on earth, building relationships, and making a difference in our spheres of influence.

Please join us on Sunday at 10:30 am ET on site, online or on demand. You are welcome here

Peace,
Rev Cathy Alexander
Associate Pastor
