This Week’s Reflection

As we move later in Lent, we are being called to observe what is so often called “Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.” Indeed, he enters as a hero, and yet of course he is not an official one; indeed those who join in the procession certainly are not agents of the Roman rulers. And as they shouted “Hosanna” and “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David” they could be called traitors by the government.
Thus, in some ways this feels like No Kings Day (scheduled the day before Palm Sunday)—in other words, it is both a celebration and a protest affirming larger truths. But the procession in Jerusalem differs from the contemporary event in our time in that the participation by many people was spontaneous on the street. And Jesus rode a colt as opposed to the usual mighty stallion or fancy coach used by a sovereign, which conveys a deliberate lack of secular or ruling glory. There is thus a way that his day of glory long ago carried what could be seen as a political message of challenging the ruling authorities.
I have long wished I could have been present on that day long ago, and have been grateful for the times I was able to join the worshippers who left the MCCDC sanctuary at the end of worship and met at the Peace Pole in front of the church and prayed.
This year, your Worship Planning Team (Rev. Cathy, Dr. Carla, and Rev. Dr. Robin) will be sharing our message together in the service. And we have chosen to incorporate the shared celebratory/protest aspects as we go forth at the end of worship to the Peace Pole. Our church has surely participated in many protests over the years and some signs from those will be on the church walls. And we invite you to bring a sign that matters to you to take outside, if you wish (though not required).
The first Palm Sunday was a day of peaceful, hopeful action, of receiving divine inspiration through Jesus and committing to create a better world. May we be grateful for the witness of our ancestors in faith and carry the message forward.
We hope you and many will join us on Sunday at 10:30 EDT onsite, online, or later on demand. It is our opportunity to join in acting with Jesus for the good of the world.
