This Week’s Reflection

One day children were brought to Jesus in the hope that he would lay hands on them and pray over them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus intervened: “Let the children alone, don’t prevent them from coming to me. God’s kingdom is made up of people like these.” After laying hands on them, he left. ~Matthew 19:13-15 (The Message)

In this passage, the people gathered and came to Jesus, bringing their children to him so that Jesus would offer a blessing over them. I imagine that the parents are full of expectation in having the Messiah bless their children and the hope and promise this would mean. When the disciples shooed them off, imagine the disappointment these parents must have experienced.

But then something unexpected happened . . . Jesus tells the disciples to “let the children alone, don’t prevent them from coming to me.” Jesus saw the children, he acknowledged them, he noticed them, he valued them, he saw their worth, he loved them. In a society where children were not really deemed valuable or worthy because they were not recognized because of the lack of what they could contribute to the family and the community, Jesus welcomed them.

Jesus extends that invitation to us all, to the children, the vulnerable, the marginalized.

Holy One, thank you for seeing us, for valuing us, for loving us. May we see the value and worth in others as you see in us. Amen.

MCCDC Hospitality Ministry needs your help!

Please donate:
· Donate/Volunteer your time once a month on Sunday to coordinate, setup or clean up during Hospitality time.
· Donate supplies:
· Food Items: Individually package cookies, Granola bars, Fresh fruit, Yogurt, Coffee, Sugar, Water, tea bags, and juices (Individually cartons)
· Dry Goods: Coffee cups, 8 inch plates, 6 inch plates, paper towels, Clorox Cleaning Spray, dish clothes and dish towels.
