“Growing comes from an inward life principle of growth. . .
the essential thing is to get within you the growing life, the wonderful divine life of an indwelling Holy Spirit. “ ~Hannah Whitall Smith, Quaker Spiritual Writer
Everything has changed. Much of it is an affront to our values at MCCDC. In the midst of the harmful changes, what positive changes are we called to make? Good change is difficult, often requiring more patience than we think we have. Yet when we commit ourselves to learning and growth, the positive change will come, though perhaps so subtly we barely notice it.
Change can be frustrating. In our Scripture from Luke 9:28-43 for this Sunday, Jesus becomes frustrated with the lack of change he sees in his disciples, even though he has been intimately mentoring them. Jesus said, “What a generation! No sense of God! No focus to your lives! How much longer do I have to put up with this?” (Luke 9: 41, The Message). Then, after venting, Jesus heals with the transformative power of love. Jesus shows them the way, and “They all shook their heads in wonder, astonished at God’s greatness” (Luke 9:43, The Message).
The message this Sunday will offer encouragement to stay focused on our journeys of positive change: “Since God has so generously let us in on what God is doing, we’re not about to throw up our hands and walk off the job just because we run into occasional hard times” (2 Corinthians 4:1, The Message). During these hard times we are called to renewed openness to what Quaker Hannah Whitall Smith calls “the growing life.”
When it comes to positive change in our lives the only failure is giving up. So to help commit and recommit to change I will share four ways that God works to bring positive change to our lives. This practical message is one we’ll be able to apply to our daily lives immediately

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

Transfigured Into Justice
This Sunday’s Highlights:
We are called to offer support in the midst of these difficult and painful times.
Countless people are impacted by unjust executive orders and continual threats.
We seek to care for others, and also for ourselves.
The framework for this Sunday is inspired by Clara Carter’s Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #131:
”God places us in the world as God’s fellow workers-agents of transfiguration. We work with God so that injustice is transfigured into justice, so there will be more compassion and caring, that there will be more laughter and joy, that there will be more togetherness in God’s world.” ~Desmond Tutu
“Transfigure us into what you want us to be so that others may see your goodness and glory magnified through our actions, and draw them close to you. Thank you, Lord, in your many precious names. Amen.” ~Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
“I alone know my purpose for you, says YHWH, my purpose for your prosperity and my purpose not to harm you, my purpose to give you hope with a future in it.” ~Jeremiah 29:11, The First Egalitarian Translation

“God places us in the world as his fellow workers-agents of transfiguration. We work with God so that injustice is transfigured into justice, so there will be more compassion and caring, that there will be more laughter and joy, that there will be more togetherness in God’s world.”~ Desmond Tutu
Dear God, we come before you as individuals, a beloved community, a nation, the whole world. Lord, we do not know your thoughts, or the purpose of your actions but we trust you to take us through these turbulent times as we draw closer to you. Help us to encourage one another in the pleasant and unpleasant periods; and to continue helping ones in need. We pray to emerge victorious for the sake of all who are suffering mightily during these uncertain times. We depend on your generous mercy for endurance to stand strong amidst the chaos happening on earth.
And, we thank you, God, for spiritual worship spaces throughout the world. We are grateful for everyone’s generosity for giving financial gifts and volunteering their talent, time and treasures to further spread the gospel. Thank you for prospering your inclusive and beloved community and for the gift of stewardship to oversee your abundance that flows according to all that was created in the beginning. Transfigure us into what you want us to be so that others may see your goodness and glory magnified through our actions, and draw them close to You. Thank you, Lord, in your many precious names. Amen.
“I alone know my purpose for you, says yhwh, my purpose for your prosperity and my purpose not to harm you, my purpose to give you hope with a future in it.” Jeremiah 29:11 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
