Jesus said, “Row out farther, into the deep water, and drop your nets for a catch.” ~ Luke 5:4, Common English Bible

Sometimes it seems that despite our best efforts, we come up empty. This happens in Sunday’s scripture from Luke 5:1-11. In this story a team of fishing partners has fished all night. They’ve done the best they know to do. And it is not working. They catch no fish. What now? Jesus shows up. Jesus invites them to go deeper. Jesus invites them to row out farther. From this new place they experience a breakthrough to abundance.

There is much to explore in this story where the gifts of Jesus meet the realities of those in need. Something I notice is that Jesus does not meet the needs from a distance. Instead Jesus moves into their difficult situation by getting into the fishing boat with them (Luke 5:3). Jesus moves right next to them in their frustration, fatigue and disappointment. And, before getting into the boat, he is teaching a crowd along the shore. From the boat, he continues to teach the crowd!

I wonder what Jesus is teaching the crowd from the shore and then from the boat? In the story before, Jesus is teaching the Good News of the Realm of God (Luke 4:43). Then, in the following story, Jesus moves from the fishing boat to nearby villages. In one of the villages Jesus meets one in need of healing. Jesus reaches out, touches that one, and says, “be healed!” (Luke 5:13)

Jesus understands the “boat” we find ourselves in today, individually and collectively. We’re not in the boat alone. Not only does Jesus understand, Jesus joins us in the boat. In abundant ways, Jesus helps us and heals us.

Holy One, help us to trust that you are at work through our effort, even when the results are slow in coming. Help us to not grow weary in doing what is right. Inspire us to work for the Realm of God and for healing of ourselves and others. Amen.

By Faith,

Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #129

by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter

“God grant us a generous heart to give and share wisely of your abundance to further your kingdom and to provide to others who are in need.” ~ Anonymous
Dear God, we are grateful for your abundance that we continue to receive and share with people in need, and to further your purpose in gathering more souls for the spiritual realm. We are thankful for the opportunities to share generously of our financial gifts, talents, time, and treasures in worship services and activities that help build an inclusive and diversified beloved community reaching into the farthest corners of the earth. Thank you for teaching us to be grateful and to give without feeling obligated or with fear of scarcity. We testify to your goodness and magnify your glory.

We are grateful for our worship space and places of spiritual worship everywhere. Let our lives be a reflection of your love and kindness that inspire others to be kind and help one another. We are thankful for your spiritual guidance in happy and the egregious periods of our lives. Guide us in our daily affairs and help us have compassion and pray for everyone whether they be for us or against us. We rejoice in your mercy and grace with gratitude. Each day we are given a new beginning. Thank you in your many precious names. Amen!

“You must give accordingly to what you have inwardly decided—not sadly, or reluctantly, for God loves a giver who gives cheerfully. There are no limits to the grace of God, who will make sure you will always have enough of everything and even a surplus of good works . . .” 2nd Corinthians 9:7-8 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
