“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love illuminates it.” ~Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
The life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. bears powerful witness to what it means to live with strength and integrity. With great impact, Dr. King lived his life from the inside out. His inner passion resulted in outward compassion. When it came to justice and equality, a deep place inside him refused compromise. 1 Corinthians 4:20 says, “The community of God is not a matter of talk but of power.”
Power comes from walking the talk. And that’s exactly the power that Dr. King lived each day. Though he preached some of the greatest sermons of all time, his greatest sermon was his life. And his legacy continues; it continues through us as we choose to live with strength.
This Sunday our worship theme is “Strength to Love.” The theme is titled after Dr. King’s book “Strength to Love,” a work that Coretta Scott King says best explains Dr. King’s “belief in a divine, loving presence that binds all life.” We will be remembering and honoring Dr. King and reflecting on how his life was an expression of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will also consider our callings to work together to walk the talk to offer lives of strong faith from the inside out.
In his final public witness in Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968 Dr. King said, “Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge, to make America what it ought to be.”
Dr. King’s witness to strength still resonates. Now more than ever, we are called to work together to make our church, our community, and our world what it ought to be.

This Sunday’s Highlights:
We’ll reflect on John 2: 1-11 which is one of the lectionary scriptures for the Second Sunday After the Epiphany.
John 2:11 says in reference to Jesus turning the water into wine:
”Jesus performed this first of his signs at Cana in Galilee; this way he revealed his glory, and the disciples believed in him.”
In John’s Gospel this is Jesus’ first public action. What’s up with that?
What questions does this text raise about the importance of celebrations?
How does this text relate to generosity, provision and abundance?
We’ll share our thoughts on these questions.
+You are invited to share your writings, scriptures or other resources/ideas with the group.

Pathways to Generosity, Prayer #128
by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
God’s Generosity #1
“Being grateful in all things is a stepping stone toward a more abundant life.” ~CMC
Looking back, I remember a season during my childhood that now fills me with the miracle of God’s generosity that prevails although I had failed to notice.
Because of an incidence that had happened during the day, my family was ordered to move in the middle of a cold winter night from our cozy rented home. We were moved into a ramshackle log cabin with no electricity, broken windows and doors which was located in a deep forest on land that had been barren for several years. Mom was left with the seven of us, ranging from ages three to thirteen.
That first year and the following years living there, the land and fruit trees overflowed with apples, pears, peaches, plums, black walnuts, hickory nuts, wild blackberries, wild strawberries, mulberries, and cherries.
We picked berries and cherries and sold them to buy Ball or Mason jars that Mom used to can food to have during the winter months. A kind neighbor gave us seed and a plot of land which we used to plant vegetable gardens each year. From the forest, we cut down trees that my mother and I chopped for firewood. And there were neighbors who surprised us with gifts of firewood during snowy winter months. God was with us in a place where I had lost hope.
Today, I am most grateful to God, our generous provider who supplies all our needs. God’s Word endures through all generations.
“And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 (The Good News Bible)
