“When Jesus arrived and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then Jesus began to teach them many things . . .” ~Mark 6:34
The ministry of Jesus reflected a deep concern for others as described in this Sunday’s Scripture from Mark 6:30-34, 53-56. In a spirit of partnership “The apostles returned to Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught” (v30). The whole region was buzzing, people were everywhere, and transformation was unfolding all around Jesus and his disciples. The world was changing before their eyes.
The transformation was exciting. And it was exhausting. Friends often know what friends need. Jesus saw the exhaustion of his friends and said to the disciples, “Come by yourselves to a secluded place and rest for a while” (v31). Jesus knew that if they were to be there for the world, they needed to be there for themselves and each other. The call to rest was not selfish. Jesus in his loving wisdom knew that rest was necessary to restore the sources of generosity.
In this week’s Gospel reading “we find a Jesus who recognizes, honors, and tends to his own tiredness. We encounter a teacher who notices his disciples’ exhaustion, and responds with tenderness. We find a Savior who probes below the surface of our frantic, ‘productive’ lives, and pinpoints the hungers our work-obsessed culture won’t allow us to name: the hunger for space, reflection, solitude, and rest” (Debie Thomas).
This Sunday, we’ll consider ways to balance compassion for the world with self-compassion.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne
