“6 Oh, Holy God, I have manifested your Name to those you gave me from the world. 8 I entrusted to them the message you entrusted to me, and they received it. 9 I’m praying for them… for those you gave me, because they are yours. 11 I’m no longer in the world, but they are in the world, even as I’m coming to you. Watch over them in your Name, the name you gave me, that they will be one just as we are one.” (John 17)
Our scripture this week tells us of Jesus praying for his followers as he approaches crucifixion, and ultimately resurrection and ascension. His prayer to the Creator acknowledges their development as believers and disciples, asks for their protection as they share his message and build community when he will no longer be present with them in the body. He prays for their joy. He has spoken to them of the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will support their continued spiritual growth-their courageous faith.
This text and focus of the lectionary coincides with the celebration of Mother’s Day 2024 in the US. And, in meditating on Jesus’ prayer as written in the Gospel of John, the intimacy and care of tone expressed raised in me memories-body, mind, and spirit-of mothering/relational prayers of life. Of the ways those who love us have prayed for us, held us in mind and heart, and contemplated and meditated on our wellness. Some may have been mothers or mother figures; some may not have been. They may be present in our lives with us, praying for and with us today. This text and time offer the opportunity and invitation to, as we wish and are ready, remember those supporters of the past and present… to reflect on:
Who has/When has someone prayed for you, held you in mind?
For whom have you prayed/do you pray?
How has/does prayer for yourself, for others, affect and support you?
How does prayer support courageously living faith?
Click here to hear Dorothy Norwood and the Georgia Mass Choir share a rousing rendition of “Somebody Prayed for Me.” I invite you to listen to it as you contemplate/meditate/pray
about Courageous Faith and Prayer.
And, please join us Sunday, on-site or by live stream at 10:30a.m. and later on demand as we continue to explore prayer and faith as we pray together in community.
Blessings,
Dr. Carla Sherrell

Pathways 2 Generosity, Prayer #107 by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
by Clara Carter, MCCDC Prayer Supporter
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” ~ John Wesley
Dear God, thank you for the “courageous faith” that propels us forward with gratitude for the generous prosperity that touch our lives in so many ways—waking up to a new day, caring for a loved one, helping a stranger through an act of kindness when he/she was not expecting it. We are blessed with prosperity—the birth of new generations who through the ages will continue to glorify your name and perform even greater miracles than generations who preceded them. The list of your generosity is so vast that it would take more than anything we can imagine because your Goodness is eternal and cannot be exhausted.
And God, thank you for our spiritual leaders who are dedicated in serving you and guiding us in worship and service according to the vision for a borderless worship throughout the world. We are grateful that Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, and all spiritual places of worship everywhere who through “courageous faith” and perseverance continue to labor and harvest souls for your realm. Thank you for a beloved community of many people sharing generously of their financial gifts, talents, skills, time, treasures, love, kindness, respect, and encouragement. Like the many parts of the body, all work together as one. Open our eyes to witness your abundance in all things. God, we praise you in your many precious names! Amen.
“And whatever you do, whether in speech or in action, do it in the name of Jesus our Savior, giving thanks to God through Christ.” Colossians 3:17 (The First Egalitarian Translation)
