This Week’s Reflection
“We ought to live each moment as if all eternity converged upon it.” -H.N. Weiman
Our prayers take many forms: from anger over gun violence, to the climate crisis, to loved ones facing health issues. Some prayers are spontaneous songs breaking out from the heart. Other prayers are a favorite scripture, poem or quote. At times there are periods of sacred silence.
One scripture for Sunday is an apt description of the time we share: “The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). How do we pray? Imperfectly: as best we can. And we do it together.
Another scripture for Sunday is a compilation of descriptions of the Beloved Community as taught by Jesus. One of the descriptions Jesus offers is “The Community of Heaven is like a mustard seed” (Matthew 13: 31). Jesus speaks of one who sows this tiny seed, the smallest of all seeds, and then watches it grow into a tree so that birds can come and make nests in its branches. In God’s world a wonderful home begins as a seed! I believe our prayers are like seeds: as we grow in the ways of prayer we find ourselves more at home in the world, even this world of many pandemics.
As Jesus teaches through descriptions and metaphors, it is clear that he believes that all the stuff of life teaches us. In the message for Sunday we’ll look at seeds as teachers of prayer, especially related to these days and times. Every prayer is a seed that converges with eternity.
In preparation for Sunday, I invite you to reflect on this question: “What does a seed of prayer grow into? What do you now experience that you prayed for previously?”
Meet you Sunday in the Sanctuary and online at 9a.m. and 11a.m. Eastern, and later on demand.
Grace and peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson

“There is always, always, always something to be thankful for.” – Unknown
Dear God, there are so many things in this world that causes stress and unhappiness, but the Holy Comforter gives us the peace and patience to endure obstacles we face from time to time. We pray to be thankful even when things get unbearable. We are thankful that your Omnipresence surrounds us always even when we feel alone.
Amazing things happen in our lives when we pray and offer praise and thanksgiving to You. Help us to surrender to your will and fulfill your purpose that You planned for us before we were born.
Thank you, God, for Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC, and spiritual places of worship where everyone is welcomed into your spiritual realm. We are grateful for everyone sharing generously of financial gifts, talents, skills, time and treasures in worship services and helping people in need. Praise your many precious names. Amen!
“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks for everything—for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1st Thessalonians 5:16 (The 1st Egalitarian Translation)
