This Week’s Reflection
“When songs rise within me, I will sing them.” ~Morgan Harper Nichols, All Along You Were Blooming
A prophet is not just a person of words. Prophets are also composers, lyricists and singers. Oleta Adams wrote and performed “I’ve Got to Sing My Song.” It is a prophetic song that conveys the power of God’s dream for her, to “Sing a praise to heaven above… Sing from deep within my soul.”
Her beloved parents had their dreams for her. God had different dreams. Oleta Adams embraced God’s dreams for her and she continues to touch countless lives through the songs of her soul.
In Sunday’s scripture from Jeremiah 18:1-6, God has something new to convey to the prophet Jeremiah: “Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words” (verse 1).
At the potter’s house Jeremiah sees a whirl of creativity. The wheel spins beauty into formation, then suddenly what seems to be nearing perfection is “spoiled in the potter’s hand” (verse 4). All seems ruined, until with a different touch the clay is reworked into a new vessel. It is beautiful and good.
God is the Ancient of Days. The songs of our forebears invite us to remember our foundations. And God is also about new beginnings and new songs. God shapes and reshapes. Through the Holy Spirit God says to our spirits: “Come here, I’ve got something to show you.”
One of our members came to church wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with a life-giving question: “What dream did God give you?” We live in a day when the dreams of some have been unfulfilled and the dreams of others have been disrupted. If you feel like your dreams have died and you can’t begin to imagine new ones, know that God the Creator of Dreams is creating new dreams for you and your life.
We are invited to sing a new song. With Oleta Adams we,
Sing it high, sing it low
Sing it from deep within my soul
Sing it loud and make it clear
Sing so everyone can hear.
See you Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Eastern in person at Fifth and Ridge NW, online, or later on demand.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson
MCCDC Senior Pastor

“God, what is it You want to do through us?” —MCCDC—
“Those who need money and those who can give money meet on the common ground of God’s love.” ~Henri Nouwen
Dear God, thank You for the opportunities presented to Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC that encourage our faith to endure the process of building our minds to receive Your abundant blessings.
God, it is You who gives us the ability to get wealth. We are grateful for Your Holy Spirit that instills in us a desire to build a more prosperous inclusive Christian community. We are also grateful for what other spiritual places of worship are doing to further Your work throughout the world.
Thank You for wisdom that helps us to remain with You on the common ground of Your unconditional love. Thank You for Your grace that enables us to prosper in all things good. We sing and praise You in Your many names! Amen.
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. And try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.” ~Malachi 3:10 (NKJV)
