This Week’s Reflection

MCCDC - The Place To Be

In challenging times—in times like these—of pandemic, of repeated acts of senseless, blatant violence perpetrated against marginalized communities through mass shootings, of wars, and climate crisis, it can be challenging to even consider being full to the brim and overflowing with freedom. One might instead be much more aware of feeling states of shock, surprise, rage, anger, fear, confusion, and/or grief because of heinous acts that are so very connected to ongoing systemic inequity and injustice in deep opposition to freedom.

Raised Black, in the United States of America, I was taught very early in my life that freedom is not just ideology, but is the stuff of breath, of life. My parents, and the Black Christian church I was brought up in taught me that God wanted freedom for us—wanted us to be free. So, I got to wonder from a very early age what that meant for me, and I got to notice and listen to others, across a range of social identities/locations (ages, genders, abilities, socioeconomic classes, and yes, sexual orientations) discussing what that meant for them. I quickly learned, at home and in church, that if I thought of God and freedom and me, I was to also remember God and freedom and community.

Luke’s telling in Acts 16 of the experiences of the enslaved woman and Paul and Silas invites contemplation and prayer on freedom of body, mind, and spirit, individually and in community. It supports us in considering the narratives of those who may be forgotten within marginalized communities. And, it tells of freedom, full to overflowing, in the midst of struggle, distress, and injustice.

Join us this Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Eastern as we, together, continue our exploration Overflowing with Freedom.

O sing to the Beloved a new song,
for Love has done marvelous
things!
By the strength of your Indwelling
Presence,
we, too, are called to do
great things;
we are set free through Love’s
justice and truth.
Yes, your steadfast Love and faithfulness
are ever-present gifts
in our lives.
Psalm 98:1-3 ~ Nan C. Merrill, Psalms for Praying: An Invitation to Wholeness, alt.

Blessings
