This Week’s Reflection
“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it.
Hatred confuses life; love illuminates it.”
~Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. bears powerful witness to what it means to live with strength and integrity. As we continue to “Follow the Star” individually and collectively in 2022, his life and values call us to action.
With great impact, Dr. King lived his life from the inside out. His inner passion resulted in outward compassion. 1 Corinthians 4:20 says, “The community of God is not a matter of talk but of power.” Power comes from living the talk. And that’s exactly the power that Dr. King lived each day. Though he preached some of the greatest sermons of all time, his greatest sermon was his life. His legacy continues through us as we choose to act with faith.
This Sunday, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Eastern, online and on demand, our worship theme is “Follow the Star to Action.” We will be remembering and honoring Dr. King and reflecting on how his life was an expression of active faith. We will also consider our callings to active faith.
Darryl Walker, MCCDC member and long-time activist, will be sharing how he has taken action and lived his call with power. He participated in the breakthrough Forsyth County Georgia March of 1987. It is a compelling story of direct activism as he marched through the streets of Cumming, Georgia. Darryl Walker asks, “Did you know that seldom do people who participate in a seminal Human Rights event grasp the full historical importance of their involvement while the event is happening?”
In his final public witness in Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968 Dr. King said, “Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge, to make America what it ought to be.”
Dr. King’s call to rise still resonates. Now more than ever, we are called to share our gifts to work together to make our church, our community, and our world what it ought to be.
Grace & Peace,
Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson
