This Week’s Reflection
In the Gospels, we find many stories of those seeking to have an encounter with Jesus—to get his attention and have an interaction with him. In our scripture this week (Mark 5), we find this to be true of a woman who is ill with uncontrolled bleeding. Despite the throngs of people and the years of failed medical procedures in her way, she is determined to get to Jesus for the healing she needs. She is healed, and from that moment, the Gospel writer takes us on Jesus’ journey to his next recorded miracle. As long as I can remember, I have always wanted to go with the woman instead. To journey with her for a while and to know more of her story. To find out where she has been prior to being with Jesus, and to know where she is going after.
“Christ Healing a bleeding woman,” as depicted in the Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter. (Fourth century AD, near Rome.)
First and foremost, I wanted to know her name. She surely had had many names. Those that family had called her as she came into the world, became a young woman, and when she became a woman of wealth (verse 26). What was she called when she developed the bleeding that changed her relationship to her community, and surely to herself? Was there anyone in her life to help her withstand those names, or for 12 years had she borne those in solitude? What did she call herself to buoy her determination to make her way to Jesus, the divine incarnate, who called her Daughter—called her Family—and pronounced her healed?
This Sunday, please join us via livestream at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. as we explore God’s love for us as God’s family, and how God knows and calls each of us by name.

Re-Entry Update
MCCDC’s c19 Advisory Team has made recommendations for safe re-entry to our sanctuary at Fifth & Ridge. Our Board of Directors has approved those recommendations.
We have not yet determined our re-entry date, given pending work on the church roof and ventilation systems. We’ll share more details at this Sunday’s Congregational Forum (see Zoom link below).
We need your help. We have many volunteer opportunities as we prepare for re-entry. We can work with your schedule. Email Melvin Moore Adams at ChurchOffice@mccdc.com for more information.
