“We are each other’s harvest; we are each other’s business; we are each other’s magnitude and bond.” ~Gwendolyn Brooks

As the responses to the Minneapolis verdict continue, I’ve been thinking about the above quote by poet Gwendolyn Brooks. She holds the honor of being the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. Many of her writings were both poetic and prophetic, wrestling with intersections of equality and justice. What could it mean for us to be each other’s harvest? In what ways are we each other’s business? How are we each other’s magnitude and bond? In this time of deep division on multiple fronts, it is important that we find strength in each other as Beloved Community.

I invite you to join your MCCDC communityClick here to join tonight on Zoom at 7pm. Tonight we will offer a respectful opportunity to respond to the verdict. It will also be a time to acknowledge that justice remains unfinished. Violence and unrest continue to rage. We are only 112 days into 2021 and already there have been over 150 mass shootings in the United States according to the Gun Violence Archive. The violence is pervasive, with disproportional impact on communities of color.

What will save us? What will heal us? Amy-Jill Levine reminds us that “Stuff cannot save us.” And so we look to Christ and to each other and to the deeper places and to our shared longings for peace and wholeness. Our gathering tonight will include communion; as always you are invited to use whatever you have available to represent the bread and cup. You do not need to be a member of MCCDC to share communion.

On Sunday, as our series Bring Heaven to Earth unfolds, we will continue to explore Matthew 5-7, Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The heart of Jesus is poured out in his life and teachings. Today the Sermon on the Mount is as relevant at Black Lives Matter Plaza as it was on that ancient hillside.

See you tonight on Zoom and Sunday at Virtual Worship at 9am and 11am.

Celebrate Mom

As we continue practicing social distancing, many of us still want to celebrate Mother’s Day with our mom and mom-figure, whether blood or chosen. MCCDC wants to celebrate and remember with you, so we invite you to email a headshot of your mom with her name. Feel free to include yourself in the picture too. We will fill the sanctuary seats with cut-outs of moms across our church family.

Please send your pictures to Melvin Moore via email, churchoffice@mccdc.com, by Sunday, May 2.
