Your love is extravagant, your friendship, it is intimate. Spread wide in the arms of Christ the love that covers sin.
No greater love have I ever known, You considered me a friend. Capture my heart again.~Casting Crowns
As we continue our Lenten journey this fourth Sunday in Lent, this week’s scripture progression invites us to explore and respond to God’s being and God’s doing. Numbers 21: 4-9 tells of how the people who were on a journey to a homeland were bitten by poisonous snakes and needed to look to a bronze snake on a pole to be saved from those snake bites. Psalm 107: 1-3, 20-22 encourages God’s redeemed people to on come out and say so. Be proud to speak out and let others know what God has done for you. The final passage in the series is the Gospel lesson found in John 3: 14-16. It tells of God’s extravagant and redeeming love for all of existence.
If we follow the Psalmists’ admonition, all who are experiencing God’s redemptive and faithful love need to take every opportunity to let others know. Call it from the north, the south, the east and the west. An important reason to tell of that love is because hardship, misunderstanding and oppression also exists in all those places. There seems to be no escaping the grip and far reaching personal and corporate impact of oppressive relationship-busting forces. The Psalm still offers encouragement. The God of relationship is with you and loves you extravagantly. Take heart, deliverance can be yours. Let those who have been redeemed from the oppression of addiction, white supremacy, racism, systems of oppression and people who hold back, say so.
God is a God of relationship. God comes in close, moves alongside and knows you so well that the Holy One gives. The very God that created each of us shows faithful love that makes a way. Are we open to receiving that love, living that love, and showing that love to others? Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.
Please join us via livestream at 9:00 and/or 11:00 a.m. this Sunday on YouTube or Facebook. Be sure to sign in and share your thoughts in the chat box. We’re looking forward to engaging with you.
Peace,
Rev. Cathy Alexander
Associate Pastor
