I am grateful for the ways that our worship series, Learning to Move in the Dark, has offered permission and encouragement to explore the complexities of how we individually, and at times, as community, think about, experience, and make meaning of darkness and light. Our shared reflection and learning on this topic have led me to develop a practice of looking for, reading, and being in prayer about passages on the dark and the light at least a couple of times a week. Readings have been from the Bible, and also from other sacred texts that have been supportive of my spiritual growth. This week, during this process, I ran into a poem by Mary Oliver. She penned it in response to her grief at the death of her partner.
THE USES OF SORROW
(In my sleep I dreamed this poem)
Someone I loved once gave me
A box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.
The poem returns us, full circle, to the first chapter of Taylor’s book in which she encourages us to explore darkness as a gift, and to the most recent chapter on “the dark night of the soul” brought to us by Rev. Dr. Robin last week. As I made these connections, I found that Oliver’s poem suddenly moved me to become curious about time and space after the dark night of the soul…. About day-by-day, and night-by-night lived experience in the body. About needs and wants, and hopes and dreams. About tools for learning to move again in the darkness and the light. About new and renewed relationship with others, with self, and with God.
Please join us for worship as we explore “After the Dark Night” this Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Also, gather with us at 12:30 p.m. for our weekly conversation about this worship series.
