“We ought to live each moment as if all eternity converged upon it.” ~H. N. Weiman

Every Monday through Saturday at noon we share a moment of eternity. The noon prayer calls started on March 26, shortly after the stay at home order. Today we joined together for our 100th prayer call! Many during our prayers are physically distancing at home while socially connecting through the call. Some are frontline workers, joining us for a few moments. Others are in busy places where they can’t speak, yet listen in silence with earbuds.

Our prayers take many forms: from anger over the murder of George Floyd to lament of the passing of Rev. Vickey Gibbs. Some prayers are spontaneous songs breaking out from the heart. Other prayers are a favorite scripture, poem or quote. At times there are periods of sacred silence. Our closing prayer is a benedictory song from a favorite artist.

One scripture for Sunday is an apt description of the time we share: “The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). How do we pray? Imperfectly: as best we can. And we do it together.

Another scripture for Sunday is a compilation of descriptions of the Beloved Community as taught by Jesus. One of the descriptions Jesus offers is “The Community of Heaven is like a mustard seed” (Matthew 13: 31). Jesus speaks of one who sows this tiny seed, the smallest of all seeds, and then watches it grow into a tree so that birds can come and make nests in its branches. In God’s world a wonderful home begins as a seed! I believe our prayers are like seeds: as we grow in the ways of prayer we find ourselves more at home in the world, even this world of many pandemics.

As Jesus teaches through descriptions and metaphors, it is clear that he believes that all the stuff of life teaches us. In the message for Sunday we’ll look at seeds as teachers of prayer, especially related to these days and times. Every prayer is a seed that converges with eternity.

In preparation for Sunday, I invite you to reflect on this question: “What does a seed of prayer grow into?”

Meet you Sunday on Livestream at 9AM and 11AM.

Peace
Rev.Elder Dwayne Johnson

Rev. Vickey Gibbs’ Final Sermon

When we suddenly lose a loved one, rarely do we receive a concise guide for how to continue that person’s work.

But consider the final sermon offered by Resurrection MCC’s Rev. Vickey Gibbs, just 33 days before she lost her battle with COVID-19.

In less than 30 minutes, Rev. Vickey describes what we must do to co-create deliverance for humankind — a ministry she sewed seeds into her entire adult life.
