John’s Gospel begins with “In the beginning was the Word…” John’s Gospel ends with “There are many other things that Jesus did-yet if they were written down in detail, the world itself, I suppose, couldn’t hold all the books that would have to be written” ( John 21:25). John’s closing words inspire me to imagine what Jesus did that was not written down in detail. And it inspires me to imagine how the resurrected Jesus is still at work bringing hope, healing and wholeness. The work of Jesus continues through us. Such resurrection work takes practice.

The Great Fifty Days of Easter continue through May 31, Pentecost Sunday. Eastertide is a time of special intention, seeing and living the signs of resurrection. We are called to work for life, pushing against the pervasive death culture that could easily beat down hope. As of this writing, the global death toll from c19 is 130,982. These deaths, most of which could have been prevented, make it difficult for many to celebrate the Great Fifty Days of Easter.

Lauren Winner writes, “I know that sometimes it is hard for me to lay claim to the reality and promise of the Easter season. Sometimes I look out the window and see resurrection everywhere, but sometimes I just see brokenness. Sometimes that is all I see when I Iook in the mirror, too. On those days it is hard to remember that Christ has triumphed, already, over all of this.”

Indeed, Christ has triumphed. To live Easter hope in the face of present realities takes practice.
One practice recommend by one of our Pastoral Care Ministers on our Noon Prayer Call is to not only focus on the pandemic death toll and lament each day. Also look at the recovery count. As of this writing the global recovery count is 505,214. It takes practice to focus on the life count. It takes practice to see beauty in the midst of global and local suffering. AND, something I’m learning through this difficult season is that through practice a shift in perspective is possible. Resurrection takes practice and intention, and it is worth it.

This Sunday we’ll look at ways to “practice resurrection” when it is not easy. We work faithfully for hope, healing and wholeness.

Remembering Dan L. Kisela

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Daniel L Kisela on April 11, 2020 at age 75. Our brother and friend served as Church Administrator for a number of years before retiring.

Condolences may be sent to the church and they will be forwarded to Dan’s spouse Lemoria Lester Jr. Rest in peace faithful servant.

~Facilitates new member classes

Operations Director (Full-time)
Position Highlights:
~ Responsible for the administrative and operational functions of MCCDC, including recordkeeping and church communication
~Entrusted with protecting MCCDC assets, including managing maintenance of our physical facilities with the Trustees
~Recruits, trains and supervises office and operations volunteers
~Maintains and coordinates church meeting/event calendar

The Soundboard Ministry Needs YOU

 

Soundboard volunteers are needed for 9 am and 11 am services. No experience needed!

You will be trained on a state of the art soundboard and learn how to set up mics for services.

Ideally, you will train at the 9 am service and continue training at the 11 am service, but we are flexible.

How to Protect Yourself

• Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds multiple times a day. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used if soap and water are not available
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick if possible
• Stay home when feeling sick [yet stay in touch with friends and family in other ways]
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash [other sites have suggested covering coughs and sneezes with your elbow or sleeve]
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
